Description
The Jusenkyo Guide serves as the primary caretaker and overseer of the Jusenkyo training ground, a mystical and dangerous collection of cursed springs located in the Bayankala Mountains of China's Qinghai Province. His primary responsibilities include maintaining the springs, warning visitors of their perilous nature, and possessing an encyclopedic knowledge of each pool's name, history, and the tragic story behind every curse, some of which stretch back centuries or even millennia. He documents these curses in a register, explains specific curses to victims, and translates local customs for foreigners, such as clarifying the lethal implications of the Chinese Amazon death kiss ritual.
In terms of personality, the Guide is professional and dedicated to his duties, though he does exhibit a subtle and occasional dark sense of humor, such as when he jokingly references cooking a character while preparing a pork dish. Despite his earnest and serious warnings, martial artists like Ranma and Genma Saotome frequently disregard his advice, opting to train on the bamboo poles above the springs and inevitably falling into them, thereby inheriting their curses. Surprisingly, given his constant proximity to danger, the Guide himself does not possess a curse, presumably due to his careful and cautious nature.
The character's motivations are rooted in duty and family. He is deeply committed to his role as the guardian of Jusenkyo, but he also mentions having a wife and is shown to have a daughter named Plum, whom he is training to eventually take over his responsibilities, suggesting the position is hereditary. His love for his family tempers his devotion to his work, as he has expressed an unwillingness to risk his life for the springs if it means leaving them behind.
Within the story, the Guide plays a crucial supporting role. He is the primary source of information regarding the cursed springs, providing exposition about their origins and the rules governing them. He interacts with nearly every character who travels to Jusenkyo, documenting their curses in his register. His knowledge extends beyond the training ground; he is also well-informed about the nearby Phoenix Mountain and the mystical treasures found there, as well as the customs of the Chinese Amazon village. The Tendo family even keeps his phone number on hand to consult him about the nature of various curses, such as that of the character Rouge.
Key relationships are primarily professional. He serves as a guide and informant to the series' main cast, including Ranma, Genma, Ryoga Hibiki, and Mousse. While he is helpful, his effectiveness is often undermined by the recklessness of those he tries to assist. He has a familial bond with his wife and daughter, though the wife is never seen, and his daughter Plum makes an appearance as his apprentice.
The character shows some development through his rare appearances outside of China. On one occasion, he travels to Japan after calculations predict a temporary connection between the Tendo family's koi pond and the mystical ley lines of Jusenkyo. During this visit, he oversees a ritual intended to transform the pond into a healing spring called the Nanniichuan, which would allow cursed individuals to remove their afflictions. The ritual fails due to an interruption, and the Guide departs immediately afterward without offering alternative solutions. Another notable appearance involves his role as the co-host of the Hot Song Contest, a musical special featuring character-based songs, where he appeared alongside the ninja Sasuke. In a different adventure, he accidentally trips over and breaks the gravestone of the Ghost Cat King while lost, inadvertently freeing the entity.
Regarding notable abilities, the Guide does not demonstrate significant combat skills or martial arts prowess. His primary talents lie in his vast, scholarly knowledge of the hundreds of unmarked springs, which he can identify and recall entirely from memory, along with their tragic histories. He is also depicted as capable of navigating the dangerous surrounding areas, such as Mount Jusendo, without the aid of a map. Physically, he is recognizable by his distinctive Mao suit, which consists of a tunic, pants, and a matching cap adorned with a star.
