Description
Ramlethal Valentine is a central figure in the Guilty Gear series and appears as a supporting character in the anime Guilty Gear Strive: Dual Rulers. She is one of the Valentines, a line of artificial life-forms created in the Backyard, a mysterious realm that governs all of creation. The Valentines were made to serve an entity they call Mother, the Universal Will, and Ramlethal is the elder sister of Elphelt Valentine and the successor to the first Valentine. Because she was born as an instrument of that will, her original purpose was to act as a weapon against humanity, and her early mission was the extermination of the human race.
Much of Ramlethal's identity is shaped by the circumstances of her creation. Like other Valentines, she was born without emotions, personal values, or a concept of right and wrong. She saw herself simply as a tool meant to carry out the orders of her creator and had no attachment to anything beyond that duty. Even so, she displayed faint signs of emotion that set her apart from others of her kind. This subtle difference became the starting point of her growth as a character.
Her introduction to the wider story came during the Cradle Incident, when she appeared suddenly in the wilderness of what was once Japan and declared war on the entire world, threatening to destroy anyone she deemed unworthy. She fought with powerful magic and a pair of giant swords, but she was swiftly subdued by Sol Badguy and the other heroes. It later became clear that her assault was only a diversion meant to allow the Conclave to carry out its plans. After her defeat she was taken into custody and interrogated, though the process was difficult at first because she lacked emotion and did not understand why her actions were being questioned.
Her development began when Sin Kiske made an effort to befriend her. Through that contact she slowly started to open up and learn what feelings were, gradually gaining an understanding of emotions and free thought. This change allowed her to break from her programming. She sided with humanity, shared what she knew about the Conclave's plan to revive Justice using the energy of the St. Elmo's Flame, and eventually fought against the Universal Will. After the conflict, she was recruited by Leo Whitefang and Ky Kiske to lead a special brigade within the Illyrian government's forces, a role she continues to hold. In this new life she experiences the world in ways she never could before, gaining new experiences and learning something new every day.
In Guilty Gear Strive: Dual Rulers, Ramlethal plays a supportive yet important role. Alongside her sister Elphelt, she is shown working to uncover the truth behind the chaos at Illyria Castle, pressing forward with an investigation into the events that disturb the peace of the kingdom. She remains an ally to the main cast, lending her strength and judgment as the story deals with threats involving anti-Gear extremists, the mysterious girl Unika, and a conspiracy that endangers all Gears. Her presence reflects how far she has come from her origins as a harbinger of destruction, now standing on the side of the people she was once created to destroy.
Her key relationships define much of her emotional journey. Her bond with Elphelt is one of the most important, as the two sisters are deeply connected despite their different personalities, and Ramlethal has at times acted to protect and guide Elphelt. Her friendship with Sin Kiske was the catalyst for her awakening, as he treated her not as a weapon but as a person worth getting to know. She also has significant ties to Sol Badguy and Ky Kiske, both of whom were involved in her capture and later in her path toward becoming an ally, and to Leo Whitefang, who helped bring her into the Illyrian military structure. Her relationship with the Universal Will, meanwhile, is one of defiance, as she chose her own path instead of continuing to serve the being that created her.
In terms of abilities, Ramlethal is a formidable combatant. She wields two giant swords with great skill and is known for controlling the mid-range of a fight, using the size and reach of her weapons to keep opponents at a distance and pressure them relentlessly. As a Valentine, she possesses physical capabilities far beyond those of an ordinary human, along with the ability to use magic. Her fighting style combines overwhelming offensive power with precise control, making her a dangerous opponent even among the extraordinary warriors of her world. Over time, her combat strength has been placed in the service of protecting others rather than destroying them.
Ramlethal's story is ultimately one of transformation. She begins as an emotionless tool shaped by another being's design and becomes a person with her own feelings, choices, and loyalties. By the time of Guilty Gear Strive: Dual Rulers, she stands as a protector of the world she once threatened, a leader among defenders, and a gentle presence learning to understand what it means to live.
