Description
The Neighbor, also referred to as Tonari no Nushi, is a human character who moves into the apartment next door to the female protagonist, Nushi, in the anime series Kaijū Sekai Seifuku. He is a salaryman, slightly younger than Nushi, and works a typical office job. His background is that of an ordinary working adult, and he struggles with everyday challenges such as home repairs, workplace stress, and the unexpected responsibility of caring for the two monster brothers who live with him, Gaogao and Garugaru.
In terms of personality, the Neighbor is portrayed as earnest and hardworking, but he is also prone to making mistakes and feeling overwhelmed by the demands of his job and his unusual living situation. He is not as naturally adept at handling the chaos of monster cohabitation as Nushi is, and he often relies on his monsters to help him manage daily tasks, sometimes receiving their assistance in ways that are both helpful and chaotic. His motivations are rooted in a desire to live a stable, ordinary life, but his circumstances repeatedly pull him into the whimsical and unpredictable world of the kaijuu.
The Neighbor's role in the story is to serve as a counterpart and foil to Nushi, the main human character. His arrival expands the world of the series, introducing a secondary human household where monsters also reside. He provides a different perspective on the experience of living with kaijuu, highlighting the challenges and humor that come from a less experienced caretaker. His interactions with Nushi are marked by a sense of camaraderie, as they bond over their shared, unusual domestic situations and support each other through both monster-related and mundane problems.
Key relationships in the Neighbor's life include his bond with the two monster brothers, Gaogao and Garugaru, who live with him. While he is their caretaker, they often take on a protective and helpful role toward him, looking out for his well-being and intervening in his affairs, sometimes to his embarrassment or frustration. He also forms a friendly neighborly relationship with Nushi, and they frequently cooperate to handle situations involving their respective monsters. Additionally, his life is touched by encounters with other characters in the series, including the mysterious figure known as Neko Shisho, who is an object of admiration for Gaogao and Garugaru.
Over the course of the series, the Neighbor experiences subtle development. He grows more accustomed to living with monsters and becomes more open to accepting help and companionship from them and from his neighbor. His initial struggles with independence and perfectionism give way to a greater appreciation for the support system around him, even when that support comes in unconventional forms.
The Neighbor does not possess any supernatural or notable abilities of his own. His capabilities are those of an ordinary human: he can perform simple household repairs, holds down a regular job, and navigates the social and practical challenges of daily life. His most notable trait is his good-natured perseverance in the face of absurd situations, which allows him to adapt to life alongside his monster roommates.
