Description
Akihiko Nirei is a first-year student at Furin High School and a classmate of the protagonist, Haruka Sakura. He serves as the co-class representative alongside Sakura and Hayato Suo. Before enrolling at Furin, Nirei was a victim of constant bullying throughout his middle school years. His life changed when he was saved by a student from Furin High School, an experience that inspired him to join the school himself with the dream of becoming a hero who protects the town.

Nirei has a generally calm and cheerful personality, and he is known for being very sociable, energetic, and candid, though he can also be somewhat clumsy. He maintains a positive and optimistic nature, but his demeanor changes dramatically when faced with danger or conflict. In such situations, he becomes highly stressed and frightened, a reaction rooted in his history of being bullied and his lack of combat skills. He is acutely aware of his own physical weakness and often feels pathetic for joining a school known for its fighters without having any fighting ability of his own, despite reassurances from his classmates that his value lies elsewhere. His primary motivation is to protect the town, a goal he pursues not through physical strength but through other means. To this end, he carries a notepad and pen to collect and analyze information on people he admires, and he possesses a remarkable memory, having memorized the names and faces of all the students at Furin High School in a single night.

Nirei's most significant relationship is with Haruka Sakura, whom he considers his right-hand man and views as someone incredibly cool and strong. Their friendship began somewhat awkwardly, with Nirei initially labeling Sakura a weirdo based on his appearance, but his opinion changed instantly when Sakura told him he was not pathetic. Nirei immediately took a liking to Sakura and offered to help him reach the top of Furin High School. As he gets to know Sakura, Nirei becomes aware of Sakura's deep-seated loneliness, which only strengthens his resolve to remain by Sakura's side and support him. He has a friendly relationship with Kotoha Tachibana, often visiting the cafe where she works for breakfast. He is also classmates with Hayato Suo, who later helps him learn to defend himself.

Despite being defenseless at the beginning, Nirei shows significant development by acknowledging his shortcomings and actively working to overcome them. Realizing he cannot be a protector if he always needs protection himself, he asks Suo to teach him how to fight. Through this training, he learns two specific self-defense techniques: the "Duck" technique, where he ducks down to trick a charging opponent into falling over him, and the "Beetle Throw," where he grabs an opponent around the waist and tosses them to the side. While he remains far from a powerful fighter, his willingness to stand his ground and use these techniques demonstrates his growth from a timid bystander into a more dependable comrade. He uses his intelligence and quick thinking to support his friends, such as texting upperclassmen for help during a fight against the KEEL gang, proving that he can be a vital asset to the team without being the strongest in a brawl.
