TV-Series
Description
Inari is a small, fox-like creature who resides on the island of Torishiro. Often mistaken for a wild fox or a creature similar to a raccoon dog, Inari is a female animal of an indeterminate but clearly uncommon nature who is deeply bonded with the local girl, Ao Sorakado. Her appearance is that of a distinctive blue-furred animal with a cute and memorable design. Rather than being a simple pet, Inari functions as a reliable companion and helper, possessing an intelligence that sets her apart from ordinary beasts.
In terms of personality, Inari is known for being a perceptive and capable individual who is highly attuned to the emotions and atmosphere of any situation. Despite not being able to speak human language, she can fully understand what is said to her, communicating through a unique and characteristic set of vocalizations described as sounds like pon or pon kyuu pon. Inari has a natural and endearing demeanor, yet also displays mischievous tendencies; she is notably attracted to human magazines and girls' underwear, and has even been known to cheer on efforts to peek at sleeping individuals. Furthermore, while she is of a species with male counterparts, Inari distinctly prefers the company of human girls over her own kind.
Inari’s primary motivation is intrinsically tied to her role as the guardian and partner of Ao Sorakado. Her central mission is to assist Ao in her search for the glowing butterflies that are essential to the mountain rites performed by Ao's family. This is not a mere errand but a core part of her existence. Inari’s devotion to Ao is profound and selfless; she has willingly consumed extremely toxic and dangerous food prepared by a character nicknamed the “Breaking Bad” cook, enduring the painful consequences and the resulting loss of her own memories in order to protect Ao from harm. Her motivation is purely to safeguard the girl she cares for and to help her succeed in her important rituals.
Within the broader narrative, Inari acts almost exclusively as an extension of Ao. Because she is almost always seen in Ao’s company, her presence is felt most strongly during the storyline that focuses on Ao. As an animal capable of perceiving the supernatural, Inari can see the seven young butterflies that are otherwise invisible or difficult for humans to find, making her an invaluable asset to the mountain rites. Beyond the central story, she also participates in the island’s recreational activities. Inari is a formidable table tennis player, forming a championship duo with the character Tenzen and acting as a challenging boss opponent in the island’s ping-pong tournament. Additionally, she appears as a powerful obtainable creature in the in-game mini-game, where she is considered a top-tier unit.
The most significant relationship Inari has is with Ao Sorakado. She is almost inseparable from Ao, and her happiness is visibly derived from seeing Ao smile. Their bond is one of mutual trust and deep care, with Inari viewing Ao as someone to watch over and protect above all else. She also forms a unique, cross-species friendship with the protagonist Hairi, for whom she shows a fondness. Her other key relationship is with Tenzen, with whom she shares a competitive yet cooperative partnership as the reigning champions of the island’s table tennis competition.
Regarding character development, Inari was not always the highly intelligent being she is. Originally an ordinary fox, her transformation occurred when she touched a child’s glowing butterfly and read its memories, an event that granted her the ability to understand human language. Her most poignant development, however, is the slow erosion of her memory. Each time she consumes the lethal cooking meant to protect Ao, she loses a part of her own past, creating a tragic cycle of sacrifice for the sake of her loved one’s safety. This detail adds a layer of bittersweet depth to her otherwise cheerful and competent exterior.
In terms of abilities, Inari's most notable power is her ability to see the special glowing butterflies, a crucial skill for Ao’s rituals. She also demonstrates an exceptional talent for table tennis, being skilled enough to completely defeat her human opponents. Her physical resilience is also noteworthy, as she is able to survive the consumption of extremely potent poisonous dishes that would likely fell any human or normal animal, although with the severe side effect of memory loss.
