Description
Ghislaine Dedoldia is a formidable swordswoman belonging to the cat-like beast race known as the Dedoldia tribe. She possesses a tall and muscular physique with dark skin, a wild mane of hair, feline ears and tail, and numerous scars across her body from countless battles. Her right eye is almost always covered by an eyepatch, which conceals a special "Magic Eye" that allows her to see the flow of mana or magical power. Her choice of clothing is typically light and revealing, prioritizing mobility and speed in combat.
Ghislaine holds the prestigious title of Sword King, making her the fourth strongest practitioner of the Sword God Style, with only those holding the ranks of Sword God, Sword Emperor, and two other Sword Kings above her. Her mastery of this school is exemplified by her ability to use its ultimate technique, the Longsword of Light, which can instantly defeat most opponents of Saint-rank or lower. Her combat prowess is further enhanced by her beastly senses of smell and hearing, as well as her Demon Eye for mana perception, making her an exceptional tracker and hunter. Her primary weapon is Hiramune, one of 48 magical swords forged from the bones of the Dragon King, which is particularly effective against metal and spiritual entities.
Born into the leadership family of the Dedoldia tribe, Ghislaine was an uncontrollable and violent child, described as a "wild beast" and a troublemaker who even bullied her older brother, Gyes. Her behavior led to her being effectively exiled from her village, entrusted to a wandering swordsman named Gal Farion, who took her to the Holy Land of Swords for training. After earning her rank as a Sword King, she left to see the world and eventually joined the renowned adventurer party called the Fangs of the Black Wolf, where she fought alongside Paul Greyrat, his future wife Zenith Greyrat, and the adventurer Geese Nukadia. Following the party’s dissolution after Paul and Zenith's marriage, Ghislaine struggled to survive in human society due to her illiteracy, lack of basic life skills, and being easily swindled. She became destitute and was found collapsed from hunger on the street, only to be rescued and given a job by Sauros Boreas Greyrat and his granddaughter, Eris. This act of kindness anchored her loyalty to the Boreas family, and she became Eris's personal bodyguard and sword instructor, a role in which she acts as a surrogate older sister to the headstrong young noble.
Ghislaine is characterized by her blunt, direct, and somewhat masculine manner of speaking. She is notorious for her lack of intellect, being functionally illiterate at the start of the story and earning the nickname of having "muscles for brains". She has difficulty following complex instructions and is prone to forgetting orders, but this does not detract from her effectiveness as a warrior. Ironically, she is an excellent teacher of swordsmanship, able to explain the theory of the Sword God Style in a clear and logical manner, as long as she is reciting what she learned from her own master. Despite her gruff and intimidating exterior, she is deeply loyal, protective, and surprisingly kind to those she considers her own.
A key aspect of her development is her relationship with Rudeus Greyrat, who is hired as Eris's tutor. Recognizing her lack of education, Rudeus agrees to teach Ghislaine how to read, write, and perform basic arithmetic in exchange for swordsmanship lessons. This mutually beneficial arrangement softens her "muscle-brain" reputation and fosters a deep mutual respect. When it becomes clear that Rudeus has no talent for the Sword God Style, she selflessly recommends he seek training in the North God Style instead.
During the Fittoa Teleportation Incident, Ghislaine is transported to a distant warzone. While making her way back, she discovers the bodies of Eris's parents, Philip and Hilda. She avenges their deaths, buries their remains, and eventually reunites with Eris and Rudeus. Later, she prioritizes taking Eris to the Holy Land of Swords for intense training over pursuing immediate revenge for the execution of her benefactor, Sauros. After Eris grows up and eventually marries Rudeus, Ghislaine fulfills her duty to the Boreas family. She then joins the entourage of Princess Ariel of the Asura Kingdom as a bodyguard, using her position to systematically hunt down and exact revenge on the conspirators who were responsible for Sauros's death.
