Description
Lewin Light, also known by the nickname Lightning, is a Senior Exorcist First Class within the Knights of the True Cross and holds the rank of one of the Four Great Arch Knights. He serves as the right-hand man and traveling companion of Arthur A. Angel, placing him as the second-highest-ranking member of the order. His first appearance occurs during the investigation into the Illuminati, a task that leads him to transfer to the Japan Branch.
Lewin Light was born in Texas, the youngest of three children with an older brother and older sister. He describes his childhood self as a trouble-making and violent child who worried his parents. From a young age, he could see demons and was fascinated by them, a trait that led other people to call him a demon. At some unknown point in his youth, he met Azazel, the King of Air, at a time when the demon could still almost speak. This encounter forged an unusually close bond between them, as Lewin refers to Azazel as grandfather. His precise nature and the origin of this relationship remain ambiguous, but he is widely considered a normal human being, albeit one with exceptional abilities.
Personality-wise, Lewin is calm, intelligent, and sarcastic. He hides his brilliance behind a lazy and carefree demeanor, but he is logical and analytical in his thinking. He openly admits that he lacks empathy and has always done so, relying on reason and personal conviction rather than emotional connections. This detached approach sometimes makes him appear cold or uncaring, but he is driven by a genuine love for the world itself. When asked why he became an exorcist, he simply states that it is because he loves this world. He is highly cunning and manipulative when necessary, capable of outwitting powerful demons such as Mephisto and even threatening the King of Time without apparent fear.
His role in the story centers on investigating the Illuminati and uncovering the truth behind the Blue Night, the catastrophic event that defined the series. He deduces that the Blue Night is the key to understanding the Illuminati's plans, and he gradually steps into the darker secrets of the Knights of the True Cross. During his investigation, he takes Ryuji Suguro as his apprentice, using him as an assistant and burden while teaching him through observation.
Key relationships define his position. He is the trusted aide of Arthur A. Angel, the leader of the Knights. His bond with Azazel is unique and mysterious, granting him privileged access to the King of Air and his demons. He also has a surprisingly bold relationship with Mephisto, the King of Time, whom he can threaten and extract information from with relative ease, something few others can accomplish. With Ryuji Suguro, he acts as a mentor, albeit a distant and unconventional one.
Development for Lewin Light is still unfolding. He is portrayed as an enigmatic figure whose past and true nature are deliberately kept ambiguous. He demonstrates an unusual ability to sense demonic phenomena, such as the opening of Gehenna's gate, a skill that parallels the sensitivity of Rin Okumura. He is also the only exorcist or tamer known to be capable of invoking demons without using the full incantation, and he controls his familiars with mere words of his own invention. His familiars are exclusively from Azazel's kin, including high-level demons like Vayu and Indra, whom he commands with ease. He broke manacles designed to nullify magic, further hinting at extraordinary physical or magical strength. Despite his high rank as an Arch Knight, he rarely engages directly in combat, preferring to work through manipulation and behind the scenes.
Notable abilities include exceptional taming skills, mastery over air demons, a shortened summoning method that no one else can replicate, and a knack for sensing demonic presence beyond normal human capacity. His analytical mind allows him to piece together hidden truths and to anticipate the moves of both allies and enemies. All these traits make Lewin Light a powerful and deeply mysterious figure in the narrative, whose true capabilities and origins remain a subject of speculation.
