Description
Grete Hilbard is a high-ranking officer in the German military who leads a unit known as Special Kommando the Second. She appears as a secondary antagonist within the Emerald Witch Arc, assuming the role of one of the primary caretakers for the young prodigy Sieglinde Sullivan as part of a secret government project. Her duties within this project place her at the Emerald Castle, where she helps maintain the illusion of the village of Wolfsschlucht and oversees the development of a new type of chemical weapon.

Physically, Grete is depicted as a tall and lean woman with long black hair, styled with her forelocks deliberately covering her left eye. Her demeanor is consistently solemn and composed, rarely displaying outward emotion even in high-pressure situations. This stoic nature makes her an effective military operative, and she possesses noteworthy leadership skills that are evident in her command style and tactical decision-making. On the battlefield, she is a discerning and calculating strategist, as shown when she chooses an alternate route through the Werewolves' Forest to ambush her targets, a decision made after carefully assessing the strengths and weaknesses of her squad.

Her primary motivation is the successful completion of her military objectives. Unlike some of her colleagues who develop personal attachments to Sieglinde, Grete remains singularly focused on the mission. She is entirely devoted to the orders given by her superiors and shows no hesitation when the directives become ruthless. When the secret factory beneath the castle is compromised, she receives orders that Sieglinde must be eliminated if she attempts to leave the forest, and she accepts this command without visible guilt or reluctance, viewing the girl as an asset that must be protected or terminated.

In the story, Grete serves as a direct physical threat to the protagonists during their escape from Wolfsschlucht. She leads her squad into the forest with the goal of capturing or killing Sieglinde to prevent the secrets of the Emerald Witch project from being exposed. During the pursuit, she demonstrates her marksmanship by engaging the Phantomhive servants, successfully shooting at Finnian while he carries Sieglinde. Her skills are notable, but she meets her match in the elder Phantomhive butler, Tanaka. She is astonished by Tanaka's ability to move silently and react instantaneously, as he slices one of her bullets in half mid-flight. When she attempts to retreat and create distance, Mey-Rin shoots her hat off, forcing her to flee the immediate engagement.

Her key relationships are primarily professional. She serves alongside Major Hilde Dickhaut, Anne Drewanz, and Wolfram Gelzer as part of Sieglinde's caregiving team. While she works with Wolfram, her loyalty to the mission sharply contrasts with his growing paternal affection for the girl. Grete is present on the day Sieglinde is officially named the Emerald Witch and helps bind her feet during the ceremony, indicating she has spent years in this role. However, she does not share Wolfram's emotional conflict, viewing the mission as paramount. This difference ultimately leads to her demise, as she later arrives at a military railway to find Wolfram, who has betrayed the project to protect Sieglinde. Wolfram shoots her in the head, and with her last breath, she condemns him as a traitor.

Throughout the arc, Grete does not undergo significant personal development; her character remains a steadfast instrument of the military project. Her abilities lie in her tactical acumen, her skill with a firearm, and her commanding presence. She is a capable soldier who trusts her own judgment in the field and is not afraid to take direct action when her subordinates fail. She is respected by her peers for her abilities, and her loss is treated as a matter of operational consequence within the larger collapse of the Emerald Witch program.
