Description
Elizabeth Midford, formally known as Lady Elizabeth Ethel Cordelia Midford, is the daughter of Marquess Alexis Leon Midford and Francis Midford, placing her in a prominent family of the British nobility. Her mother is the sister of the late Vincent Phantomhive, making Elizabeth the first cousin and childhood fiancée of Ciel Phantomhive, the young Earl of Phantomhive and the Queen's Watchdog. She has an older brother named Edward Midford.

In terms of appearance, Elizabeth is a young teenage girl with a petite yet strong physique. She has pale skin and distinctive emerald green eyes. Her long, golden-blonde hair reaches her waist and is almost always worn in two large, curled drills, with a slightly curled cowlick. Her wardrobe consists primarily of elegant gowns and dresses, often accessorized with headbands decorated with flowers or ribbons, gold earrings, and notably, low-heeled shoes.

Elizabeth’s personality is a study in striking contrasts. To the outside world, she initially presents herself as a cheerful, strong-willed, and somewhat self-centered young lady with an intense fondness for anything she deems cute, from ribbons and flowers to rabbits and kittens. She can be extravagant and fastidious about fashion, often imposing her sense of style on others, including the staff at Phantomhive Manor, and is prone to temper tantrums when she does not get her way. This innocent and endearing demeanor was cultivated based on advice from her aunt, Angelina Dalles, who taught her that ladies should appear weak and sweet in front of their lords. However, this is a deliberate facade. Beneath this ladylike exterior lies a person who is truly brave, clever, and a naturally gifted swordswoman. Her brother Edward has admitted that her skills with a blade surpass his own.

Elizabeth’s primary motivation centers almost entirely on Ciel Phantomhive. Her love for him is described as profound and, by one observer, nearly obsessive. She goes to great lengths to see him smile and is frequently consumed with worry for his safety and emotional well-being. A pivotal moment in her childhood shaped her entire worldview. While watching Ciel fence with her mother, a young Ciel remarked that he was afraid of strong wives, expressing relief that Elizabeth was his fiancée. Wanting to be a wife he could protect, she wished to quit her swordsmanship training. The tragic murder of Ciel’s parents and his subsequent disappearance changed this resolve. After his return, she noticed she had grown taller than him and vowed to become a wife capable of protecting him instead. She wears low-heeled shoes specifically to avoid towering over him so she can "smile and walk beside" him as he struggles to appear as an adult.

Within the story, Elizabeth serves as a major source of emotional support and light in Ciel’s otherwise dark life. While she is often the instigator of lighthearted or comedic moments, such as decorating the manor without permission, her role gains significant emotional weight in more serious arcs. Her role in the Emerald Witch Arc highlights her as a loyal and steady presence. During a formal audience with Queen Victoria, Ciel experiences a moment of weakness. In this austere and high-pressure setting of the royal court, Elizabeth is shown to be more than just a frivolous fiancée. She holds Ciel firmly, providing real, emotional stability and proving herself to be a loyal companion who can support him even in the most intimidating circumstances.

Elizabeth’s key relationships are primarily centered on her family. Her relationship with Ciel is complex but deeply devoted. Though their engagement was arranged, her feelings for him are genuine. She strives to be both the innocent girl he once said he wanted and the strong protector he now needs. While Ciel often appears cold or annoyed by her antics, he has shown genuine care for her, even risking his safety to protect her. Her relationship with her brother Edward is also protective, and he respects her abilities as a swordswoman. She is often accompanied by her loyal personal maid, Paula.

Elizabeth undergoes significant character development, moving away from simply hiding her true nature to embracing it. For a long time, she concealed her exceptional swordsmanship and physical strength from Ciel, terrified that he would reject her if he saw her as a strong, unfeminine warrior. However, when faced with deadly threats, such as the hordes of bizarre dolls, she was forced to abandon her act and reveal her prodigious combat skills to protect him. This marked a turning point. She began to shed the insecurity about her height and strength, learning to accept that her ability to fight is not something to be ashamed of but rather a crucial part of who she is and a way to safeguard the person she loves.

Her notable abilities are exceptional. Despite her small stature, Elizabeth is a natural genius in swordsmanship and fencing. She demonstrates remarkable skill, often wielding dual swords with an acrobatic grace that allows her to take down multiple, powerful enemies. Her prowess is such that she can briefly hold her own against inhuman opponents, and her own brother concedes her talent is superior to his. She is strong, fast, and agile, making her a surprisingly formidable fighter.
