Description
Fumi Namatame is a student and a prominent antagonist in the series, serving as the leader of the fearsome Class 2-10. This special class, located in the sub-basement of the school, is composed of children who have committed severe crimes, including the murder of adults, and is isolated from the rest of the student body due to the danger they pose. Namatame’s outward appearance is one of politeness and innocuous normalcy, which belies her deeply disturbed and violent nature. She is characterized by a chilling, ruthless demeanor, capable of extreme brutality such as nonchalantly shooting the school principal and attacking festival-goers, yet she is also capable of showing a disarming, "creepily cute" blood-soaked smile.

Her motivations are rooted in a tragic and traumatic past. Namatame lived with a mother who was obsessively fixated on youth and beauty, a mental affliction that led her mother to mutilate herself by cutting off her own hands when they could no longer be "fixed" by surgery. Unable to bear witnessing her mother’s suffering and madness, Namatame killed her as an act of mercy. This event forged her worldview, leading her to view adults and the inevitable process of aging as a source of corruption and misery. She spends her days in a state of purgatory, caught between longing for the lost, gentle touch of her mother, symbolized by her carrying dead plants, and a desire to "put out of their misery" other hopeless adults. This mission is directed by the principal, Oshibu, who tasks her with assassinating Santa Claus.

In the story, Namatame is a primary physical and psychological threat to the protagonist, Sanda. She targets him specifically because he, as Santa Claus, represents an adult figure who must be destroyed. Her role escalates during the Peak of Youth ceremony, a festival celebrating fifteen-year-olds, where she launches a deadly rampage, turning the celebration into a shooting ground and targeting not only Sanda but any adult she finds. Despite her bloodthirsty mission, Namatame is portrayed as a deeply conflicted figure. She acknowledges that Santa is the first adult to ever show her any form of kindness, creating an internal struggle between her directive to kill and her buried yearning for compassion.

Key relationships drive her character development. Her primary dynamic is with Sanda, who refuses to fight her lethally. Instead of using his powerful "Black Santa" form to punish her, he resolves to bear all her attacks, believing that is the true role of an adult. This non-violent approach, including offering her a rice ball during her rampage, creates a profound and unsettling connection between them. Her relationship with Principal Oshibu is one of manipulation; he provides her with weapons and encouragement, though she shows him no loyalty, even attempting to kill him to test his nature.

Throughout the series, Namatame exhibits notable abilities that make her a formidable adversary. She is highly proficient with firearms, using them with calm, lethal precision against both Sanda and Oshibu. Her trauma manifests in powerful, tangible hallucinations, such as spectral horses that charge through festival grounds, trampling everything in their path and making her inner turmoil a physical threat to others. Her development is marked not by a redemption arc but by a forced confrontation with her own trauma, as Sanda’s persistent, non-lethal compassion and his act of saving her from a fire create a fragile, unresolved tension in their relationship. She remains a symbol of the series’ central tragedy: a child made into a monster by the twisted obsession with youth perpetuated by the adult world.
