Description
Père Noël is the legendary Santa Claus persona that serves as the transformed state of Kazushige Sanda, the protagonist of the anime Sanda. Within the story's setting, a future Japan affected by a severe decline in birth rates, Santa Claus has been sealed away for a long time because of a curse, and Christmas is widely believed to be an ancient custom or a fictional legend. On a snowy December 25, Kazushige Sanda's body seal is broken by his classmate Shiori Fuyumura, which causes him to manifest this form for the first time. From that point on, he transforms into Père Noël whenever he wears red clothing and reverts to his ordinary schoolboy appearance by eating a type of candy called Bratty Beans.
In appearance, Père Noël is a white-bearded adult with an imposing, heavily muscular physique, similar to a wrestler or bodybuilder, yet the personality behind that body remains that of a young teenager. The character is defined by the contrast between this powerful adult exterior and the childlike, compassionate, and somewhat impulsive mind of Kazushige Sanda. While in this form, Sanda tends to perceive young people around him as children and is moved by a strong sense of compassion to help them. His earnest and impulsive nature becomes especially visible when he is fighting or fully absorbed in a task, and the series portrays the Santa form as carrying Sanda's heart despite its intimidating appearance.
The background of the character is tied to the idea that Kazushige Sanda is the descendant of a lineage of Santa Claus figures, which explains why the transformation is possible. Before his awakening, Sanda had no knowledge of this heritage, and he initially has no idea how to control the body or what powers it grants him. His motivation in taking on this role is shaped largely by the request of Shiori Fuyumura, who broke his seal in the hope that he would help find her missing classmate Ichie Ono and remind society of what Christmas once meant. This leads him to accept the mission instinctively and to use his abilities to help his friends with problems connected to Christmas traditions, while also confronting the oppressive forces controlling the children of this future society.
In the story, Père Noël functions as the central form through which Sanda confronts the school's tyrannical headmaster, Hifumi Oshibu, and other threats. The transformation also places Sanda in opposition to figures who seek to exploit or destroy the Santa Claus legacy, and his actions gradually make him a symbol of resistance and hope for the children around him. His relationship with Shiori Fuyumura is especially important, as she is the one who awakens him and becomes his partner in the search for Ono, while his training with Toyo Tetsudome introduces him to a harsher understanding of adulthood, including the idea that becoming an adult requires committing sins.
The character undergoes notable development over the course of the story. Early on, Sanda experiences a personal crisis, believing that he is aging rapidly every time he transforms, and he struggles with the unfamiliarity of his new body. Through training and conflict, he learns to accept and channel the power, eventually unlocking a superior variation known as the Black Santa form, which is associated with punishing those who misbehave. Despite this darker power, he remains opposed to using violence against minors and ultimately seeks to use his strength to protect his friends and preserve a sense of childlike kindness in a world that pressures young people to grow up too quickly.
Père Noël is also distinguished by a set of supernatural abilities rooted in Santa Claus traditions. These include superhuman strength, resistance to fire, the ability to detect lies, and the ability to grow skis on his feet. The transformation itself is governed by specific rules, with red clothing triggering the change and Bratty Beans reversing it, and his growing mastery over these conditions reflects his journey from a confused teenager to a figure capable of carrying the weight of the Santa Claus legacy.
