Description
Butagalian is a legendary merchant and a pig-type subhuman from the anime Headhunted to Another World: From Salaryman to Big Four!. He is known by two formidable nicknames: The Prophet and The Merchant of Death. The former title comes from his uncanny ability to always stay ahead of market trends, while the latter does not stem from selling weapons as one might assume, but from his practice of continuing to trade in active conflict zones.

In terms of background, Butagalian is a figure who dominates the economics of war zones and is considered a dark charismatic figure in the underworld. His business acumen is known across the three worlds, and he has built an overwhelming network spanning everything from black market deals to legitimate trade. Despite his ruthless reputation, a more complex side is revealed in his personal life; he uses his immense wealth to adopt orphans and offer them work, operating an orphanage called the Black Cradle. These adopted children later form a shadow information-gathering unit for him known as the Lullaby of Twilight.

His personality is characterized by a fierce and ruthless drive to succeed in business, to the point where he is willing to build mountains of corpses to make a profit. He originally appears as an antagonist, severely embarrassing the protagonist Uchimura and his colleague Sylphid by undercutting their work. However, the narrative presents him as a nuanced character rather than a pure villain. He is desperate to maintain his success, yet this is contrasted with his philanthropic actions, making him difficult to hate.

In the story, Butagalian serves as an adversary and later an unlikely ally. After being exposed by Uchimura for selling fake goods to King Rampage, he finds himself in a life-or-death situation. Rather than having him executed, Uchimura chooses to show mercy and save his life, recognizing Butagalian's value as a strategic asset. Uchimura then entrusts Butagalian with the responsibility of trading a valuable resource called Rosemarin beyond the Demon Lord's territories. This marks his major development, as he transitions from a desperate rival to a de facto unofficial economic advisor to the Demon Lord's army.

His key relationship is with the protagonist Uchimura. While they initially engage in a deadly battle of wits, Uchimura's decision to spare him out of kindness confuses Butagalian and places him in Uchimura's debt. Their conflict ends not in destruction but in a mutually beneficial partnership, with Butagalian warning Uchimura of future strife near the kingdom as a gesture of goodwill. He also has a tense relationship with King Rampage, who nearly has him killed for selling counterfeit goods.

Butagalian's notable abilities are almost entirely focused on commerce and espionage. He possesses a legendary and exceptional talent for sales and market prediction. More than just a trader, he has constructed a vast and powerful network of alliances and favors across the underworld, making him so influential that his death could potentially start a border war.
