Description
Kenta Maezono is a student at Seidou High School and a key member of its baseball team, eventually becoming a third-year student and assuming the role of vice-captain alongside Youichi Kuramochi. He originally comes from Osaka Prefecture, which is reflected in his use of the Kansai dialect. Known to his teammates by the nickname Zono, he is a tall and imposing figure with a strong build, standing at 180 centimeters tall and weighing 75 kilograms. His facial expression can often appear fierce or scary, especially when he is batting, but this intimidating look belies his true nature.

Maezono has a personality that is rough around the edges in terms of his speech, but he is fundamentally a kind and considerate person. Having spent a significant amount of time as a member of the second string, he possesses a deep understanding of the feelings of teammates who struggle to make the roster or see limited progress. This background has made him compassionate and good at taking care of his underclassmen. He is one of the most vocal and outspoken members of the team, never hesitating to voice his thoughts, even if it means directly disagreeing with the captain, Kazuya Miyuki. Despite his scary appearance, he is consistently portrayed as a thoughtful individual who looks out for the entire team. He is also known for having the loudest voice among his peers and for having performed more practice swings than any other player in his year, a testament to his strong work ethic.

Maezono's primary motivation is to contribute to the team's success and to live up to the legacy of the powerful hitters who came before him, such as Azuma Kiyokuni and Isashiki Jun, both of whom he deeply respects. He was driven to join Seidou specifically because of Azuma. As a player who spent a long time in the second string, he is eager to prove himself as a core member of the team's lineup and to support his teammates from his position as a starter and vice-captain. He holds a great deal of respect for Eijun Sawamura, admiring the pitcher's relentless persistence and refusal to give up on becoming the ace even with a talented rival like Satoru Furuya on the team.

In the story, Maezono serves as a steadying presence and a source of power in the batting order. He is the primary first baseman for Seidou. His role expanded significantly when the third-year players retired, as he was promoted to the first string and chosen as vice-captain, a position that requires him to support the captain and help manage the team. He is often looked to for his motivational words and his willingness to confront issues head-on, even if his initial approach can be blunt.

Maezono's key relationships are well-defined. His relationship with Captain Miyuki Kazuya is complex; he openly respects Miyuki's genius-level talent and acknowledges his fitness as captain, but he also dislikes Miyuki's detached and sometimes manipulative manner. This tension creates a dynamic where Zono is not afraid to challenge the captain for the good of the team, and Miyuki is comfortable enough with Zono to tease him in return. He shares a close bond with his roommate, Haruichi Kominato, often acting as a batting buddy and mentor to the younger infielder. He also has a good relationship with Eijun Sawamura, respecting his work ethic and finding encouragement in the pitcher's determination. His respect for his upperclassman, Isashiki Jun, is very high, as he admires Jun's unique and powerful batting style.

Maezono undergoes notable development throughout the series. After being a benchwarmer, he seizes his opportunity as a starter in the fall tournament. He struggles initially, with Coach Ochiai even suggesting he should be removed from the lineup. However, he works to overcome his flaws, and after receiving advice from Coach Kataoka to focus on hitting over the shortstop, he shows improvement and delivers crucial hits in important games, such as a game-changing double against Teitou. This represents a significant step in his growth as a reliable cleanup hitter. Despite this progress, he experiences a setback when he overhauls his batting form in the off-season, which leads to him being benched for the Spring Koshien tournament. This event highlights his tendency to be stubborn and his occasional struggles with consistency, but it also shows his relentless drive to improve.

As a player, Maezono's most notable ability is his raw power, which is considered among the best on the Seidou team. He is a classic pull hitter, capable of driving the ball deep into the outfield when he makes solid contact. He is particularly strong against pitches on the inside corner of the strike zone. However, his abilities are balanced by clear weaknesses. He struggles with hitting to the opposite field, has poor plate discipline and a tendency to swing at many pitches, and is vulnerable to breaking balls and pitches on the outside corner. His defensive skills at first base are solid, and he possesses a strong throwing arm, but his running speed is only average. His mental strength can waver, but his powerful swing and physical strength make him a constant threat in the batter's box, especially in clutch situations where the team needs a big hit.
