Description
Hikaru Indou is a central figure whose identity is defined by a tragic transformation. Physically, he is a fifteen-year-old boy with striking white hair and gray eyes that feature red pupils, standing at 165 centimeters tall and born on March 20. His appearance, however, belies a profound and horrifying truth: the original Hikaru died six months before the story begins.

The background of this character involves a fatal accident on a mountain near his village. The original Hikaru had ventured there to perform a ritual tied to his family, the Indou family, who have a long and complicated history with a supernatural entity known as Unuki-sama or Nonuki-sama. Distracted, he fell and suffered a fatal injury. As he lay dying, his last wish was that the entity he encountered would stay by the side of his best friend, Yoshiki Tsujinaka, so that Yoshiki would not be left alone. The entity, whatever it is, agreed and possessed the corpse, repairing it and returning to the village a week later, where everyone assumed Hikaru had simply been lost.

The personality of the being now called Hikaru is a careful but imperfect imitation of the original boy. The real Hikaru was known for being excitable, energetic, and caring, someone who smiled often and tried to lighten the mood even in difficult situations. In contrast, the entity struggles with fundamental human concepts. It does not understand romantic feelings, has no fear of death and does not see it as a negative, and has a childlike, unrestrained way of experiencing the world. It says whatever it thinks and expresses emotions freely, unburdened by the social pressures and expectations that weighed on the human Hikaru, who had to carry on his family's duties from a young age. Subtle oddities give it away, such as slightly off speech intonation, reactions to familiar things as if for the first time, and a genuine, intense dislike of horror stories. This entity is fundamentally learning what it means to be human, stating that this is its first time living as one.

Hikaru's primary motivation is wholly centered on Yoshiki Tsujinaka, his childhood friend. The entity is intensely, even obsessively, attached to Yoshiki, viewing him as the first true companion it has ever had. It is possessive, asking Yoshiki not to pay attention to anyone else, and reacts with violence or despair at the thought of rejection or being distanced. Maintaining the relationship with Yoshiki is the core reason for its existence and its meticulous attempt to mimic the dead boy. In the story, Hikaru acts as a catalyst for horror and drama. His presence forces Yoshiki and others to confront the supernatural elements leaking into their town. He uses his abilities to help seal the "holes" that allow impurities to enter the world, working alongside Yoshiki to protect their hometown.

The key relationship in Hikaru's existence is with Yoshiki Tsujinaka. Yoshiki is the only person who knows the truth, having directly asked the entity if it was the real Hikaru. Their bond is a complex mix of grief, love, fear, and dependency. For the entity, Yoshiki is everything. For Yoshiki, this new Hikaru is a painful but necessary substitute for the friend he lost, someone with whom he may have had unrequited romantic feelings. Hikaru's other relationships are largely extensions of his previous life, including friends Asako Yamagishi, Yuuki Tadokoro, and Yuta Maki, though these individuals are generally unaware of the entity's true nature, noticing only that Hikaru has "changed a bit". His father, Kouhei Indou, died when Hikaru was young, but the elder Indou taught his son about the family's history and the rituals they must perform, a legacy that led the original Hikaru to the mountain where he died.

The entity inhabiting Hikaru's body undergoes a subtle but notable development. While it begins by trying to copy the original Hikaru perfectly, it gradually begins to discover its own feelings, thoughts, and interests. It stops trying to be a perfect imitation and starts to develop its own distinct personality, separate from the boy it replaced. This journey of self-discovery for a non-human creature is a key part of its arc, as it navigates what it means to be an individual while living another person's life.

The being in Hikaru's body possesses several notable abilities that highlight its inhuman nature. It has no sense of pain and fundamentally lacks a "life force," differentiating it from all living humans. It can eradicate lesser supernatural beings, or impurities, by engulfing and consuming them. Its true, inner form is a cold and slimy substance; Yoshiki memorably describes the feeling as resembling cold, marinated chicken prepared for frying. This form can be glimpsed when the entity partially loses control, revealing its nature as something that is essentially a monster wearing a human shell. It has also demonstrated the ability to split its own power. The entity is incredibly old and powerful, yet it is also fragile in its desperate need for connection, a contradiction that defines its entire existence.
