Description
Norland von Lunebelg is the main antagonist of Code Geass: Rozé of the Recapture. He is the de facto ruler of the Neo-Britannian Empire, operating behind the figurehead Emperor Callis al Britannia. He founded the empire by invading the Hokkaido Block of Japan during the Kowa period and established the Einberg, an order of elite knights directly serving the emperor, in which he holds the title of White King. Prior to these events, Norland served as the Knight of Five among the Knights of the Round under the former Holy Britannian Empire.
Norland was originally created as an enhanced clone of Emperor Charles zi Britannia, intended to serve as a vessel for Charles’s consciousness as part of the Ragnarok Connection plan. The geneticist William Bisch was tasked with his creation. When Charles’s body remained viable and he later died, Norland lost his intended purpose. After Lelouch vi Britannia’s rise and the collapse of the Britannian Empire, Norland developed a deep hatred for humanity. He became the king of the territory of Lunebelg, which refused to join the new Republic of Britannia. He later orchestrated a staged surrender to the United Federation of Nations, then launched a surprise attack on Hokkaido to establish Neo-Britannia, rallying disaffected nobles and founding the Einberg.
Norland is depicted as an extremely tall, well-built man with fair skin and long sandy-blonde hair usually tied in a thin ponytail. His most distinctive feature is an ornate black-and-gold mask that conceals the upper half of his face; beneath it, his facial features are identical to those of a young Charles zi Britannia, including purple eyes. He wears a predominantly black uniform with gold trim, a burgundy vest, white trousers, and tall black boots.
His personality is cold, ruthless, and domineering. He speaks very little but exudes an intimidating presence that can terrify those around him. He is intolerant of excuses and disposes of subordinates once they are no longer useful, including killing Emperor Callis without hesitation. He regards humanity as pests to be exterminated, viewing himself as separate from ordinary people due to his origins as a clone. His ultimate goal is the annihilation of all human life, which he pursues through the deployment of autonomous weapons called Lokis. This motivation is not openly explained within the story, leaving his actions enigmatic to other characters.
Norland’s role in the story is that of the hidden mastermind. He allows the brutal acts of his subordinates like the Kirkwayne brothers while also authorizing seemingly conciliatory measures such as a special zone for the Japanese, maintaining an air of mystery. He pilots the customized Knightmare Frame Foulbout and is a highly skilled combatant, having been one of the strongest Knights of the Round.
Key relationships include his adoptive sons Ash and Nichol Phoenix. He adopted them under a scheme called the Vogue Scheme, but considered Nichol useless and intended to abandon him. When Ash pleaded to stay with his brother, Norland exploited his desperation, training Ash as an assassin under Christoph Scissorman and using him to eliminate enemies. After Nichol’s death at Norland’s hands, Ash attempted to assassinate him but was captured and imprisoned.
Norland also has influence over Catherine Sabathra, whom he saved from a kidnapper in her childhood, inspiring her absolute loyalty. He maintains a long-serving subordinate in Christoph Scissorman, who conducts Geass research and trained Ash. Another key subordinate is Stanley, who develops the Lokis; Norland kills him once the weapons are activated, deeming him unnecessary.
Norland’s development is minimal in that he remains consistently driven by his misanthropic goal. He appears to show no remorse or change, and he dies in battle against Ash and Sakuya Sumeragi (disguised as Rozé) when his Foulbout is destroyed. He triggers the Foulbout’s self-destruction, leaving no remains.
His notable abilities include exceptional piloting skill, command over the Einberg, and control over the Shitunpe Barrier, an energy wall that prevents incursion into Neo-Britannia. He also operates the Foulbout, a powerful Knightmare Frame with advanced weaponry. His true origin as a clone gives him physical capabilities comparable to a young Charles.
