Description
Born Yelena in the northern tundra of the Ursus Empire, FrostNova is a former leader of the Reunion movement and the commander of its elite Yeti Squadron. Her early life was shaped by the oppressive policies of the Ursus military, as her family was sentenced to labor camps where they were forced to mine Originium. Her parents were killed when she was five, and her grandmother when she was nine, all victims of a brutal lottery system of execution used by the guards. At the age of eleven, FrostNova herself drew the black lot and was nearly executed, but her dormant Originium Arts manifested violently, killing her would-be executioners. She was rescued by a guerrilla fighter known as Patriot, who became her adoptive father and mentor, with the other rescued children eventually forming the Yeti Squadron that she would come to lead.
FrostNova presents a cold and distant demeanor, both in personality and in a literal sense due to the effects of her Arts and Oripathy. Her body temperature is so low that others risk frostbite simply by touching her skin, and she consumes chili candies and strong alcohol like vodka to maintain her body heat. Despite her icy exterior, she is deeply compassionate, especially toward her Yeti Squadron, whom she treats as brothers and sisters. She restrains her full power to avoid harming them, showing a protective and caring nature. This warmth, however, is buried beneath years of suffering and a hardened resolve shaped by the injustice she witnessed as a child. Her motivation throughout the story is driven by a desire to liberate the Infected from oppression, but as the Reunion movement becomes more radical under Talulah's leadership, FrostNova's goal shifts to trying to recall Reunion to its original principles and stop the senseless violence.
Within the narrative, FrostNova serves as a major antagonist and a tragic figure. She first clashes with Rhodes Island in the ruins of Chernobog, displaying her overwhelming power against Amiya and other operators. Her most significant role occurs during the Lungmen crisis, where a skirmish with Rhodes Island causes the ground to collapse, trapping her and the Doctor together. During their time underground, she reveals her tragic past and her growing disillusionment with Talulah, recognizing the Doctor as a potential key to stopping the Reunion leader's maniacal plans. After a devastating retreat where her Yeti Squadron is annihilated, a dying FrostNova confronts Rhodes Island one last time, unleashing her full power. She declares a duel, stating that only one party will survive. Ultimately, she succumbs to her Oripathy, but before her death, she expresses her wish to join Rhodes Island, seeing hope in their cause.
FrostNova's most significant relationship is with Patriot, her adoptive father, whom she respects but also clashes with due to his stubborn and conservative nature. She also shares a complex history with Talulah, initially seeing her as a humble hero for the Infected but later recognizing her as a violent tyrant, though FrostNova discourages Patriot from killing her, believing they have no right to judge her. Her encounter with the Doctor from Rhodes Island is pivotal, as the Doctor becomes the person she entrusts with her final hopes, leading to her posthumous recognition as a member of Rhodes Island.
Development occurs through her shift from a loyal Reunion leader to a woman fighting for redemption. Realizing her time is limited due to her deteriorating health, she chooses to stop running from her fate. Her final act is not one of revenge but of defiance against the world that wronged her. By accepting the Doctor's embrace and declaring her allegiance to Rhodes Island, she finds the warmth she had been denied her entire life, signifying her acceptance of a new, peaceful ideal.
FrostNova possesses powerful ice-based Originium Arts, capable of lowering the surrounding temperature to freezing points and creating Originium ice crystals. She chants her spells in the form of folksongs, channeling her power through a caster wand. However, this power comes at a great cost, as the use of her Arts accelerates her Oripathy, causing extreme hypothermia and physical deterioration. In her final battle, she reaches a state where Originium crystals float around her, representing her full, unrestrained potential and her acceptance of death.
