Description
Akatsuki is a supporting character in the anime Kakuriyo -Bed & Breakfast for Spirits-. He is an ayakashi, a kind of spirit, who specifically takes the form of a tsuchigumo, or earth spider. Originating from the human world, known as the Apparent Realm, Akatsuki now resides in the Hidden Realm where he holds the prestigious position of the head clerk at the Tenjin-ya inn, having earned his executive role at a young age due to his dedication and skill.
His personality is defined by a serious and diligent commitment to his work, often to the point of being seen as a workaholic and quite stubborn. This stern and somewhat gruff exterior, however, belies a more caring nature, particularly when it comes to his younger sister, Suzuran, for whom he is deeply protective. Despite his competence, he has a notable weakness in dealing with small children, finding them awkward and out of his element. His initial demeanor towards the protagonist, Aoi Tsubaki, is distant and marked by hostility, which stems from a deep-seated grudge against her late grandfather, Shirou Tsubaki. The reason for this resentment is that Shirou suddenly forced Akatsuki and Suzuran to move from the human world to the Hidden Realm, an event that significantly shaped their lives.
Akatsuki's role in the story is largely tied to his position at Tenjin-ya, where he interacts with Aoi as she begins working at the inn to pay off her grandfather's debt. His initial suspicion and animosity toward her, due to her blood relation to Shirou, slowly evolve as the narrative progresses. A significant turning point in his development occurs during a conflict with his sister. When Suzuran expresses a desire to return to the human world, the siblings have a physical fight. It is revealed that their family in the human world was killed, and they were the sole survivors before being taken in by Shirou. Akatsuki's resentment is fueled by a belief that Shirou favored Suzuran, and he feels the ayakashi spirit essentially cast them out. During the aftermath of this fight, Aoi helps reconcile the siblings by making traditional Chinese dumplings with Akatsuki, an activity that allows him to lower his guard around her. Through this process, their relationship improves significantly.
Beyond his familial bonds, Akatsuki has a rivalry with Hatori, the general manager of the Orio-ya, a competing inn. His notable abilities are connected to his nature as a tsuchigumo. While he typically appears as a young man with reddish-brown hair and a high ponytail, he can transform into a massive, much larger spider form. This ayakashi form features a light purple body with black markings and brilliant purple legs. An unusual trait is that when he loses significant spiritual energy, his true form shrinks dramatically to a size small enough to fit under a person's arm, and his coloration reverses to a black body with light purple markings.
