Description
Hoo Byodoin is the captain and top-ranked number one player of the Japanese U-17 national tennis team. An eighteen-year-old third-year student from Makinotou Gakuin High School in Hyogo Prefecture, his imposing presence and overwhelming power distinguish him as the undisputed leader of the representative squad. He stands 189 centimeters tall and weighs 74 kilograms, with a right-handed playing style that is classified as all-rounder. Byodoin has long, unkempt blonde hair and a trimmed beard, giving him a rugged and mature appearance often compared to a bandit chieftain. He typically conceals a scar on his forehead with a headband, a mark left from a past match against his rival, Juujirou Oni.

Byodoin's personality is defined by extreme arrogance, aggression, and an overwhelming sense of authority. He speaks and acts with a dignity and ruthlessness that seem far beyond his years, believing firmly that kindness and righteousness alone cannot conquer the world. His philosophy is that to lead Japan to the top, he must be willing to mercilessly crush anyone, including his own teammates, if it makes them stronger. The number three player, Duke Watanabe, and later Shuichirou Oishi, address him as Boss, reflecting the loyalty and fear he commands. Despite his harsh and violent exterior, Byodoin possesses a hidden sense of justice and chivalry. He once risked his own safety to protect Duke Watanabe's younger sister from a falling roof, an act of compassion that resulted in a severe back injury and a crucial loss for Japan. This incident solidified his belief that mercy leads to defeat, yet his underlying sense of honor continues to inspire those around him.

The primary motivation driving Byodoin is his unwavering ambition to lead Japan to victory in the U-17 World Cup. Two years prior to the main storyline, he was defeated by Oni in a violent match, which sent him to a harsh cliffside training ground for a year. This loss ignited an obsessive drive for strength, leading him to undergo brutal spiritual and physical training to acquire power from another dimension. He later spent time traveling the world with Duke Watanabe, seeking out the strongest opponents to challenge and break his own spirit, all in preparation for the world stage.

In the story, Byodoin serves as the final obstacle and the ultimate symbol of strength within the Japanese team. He returns to the U-17 camp from an overseas expedition with the other members of the first string, immediately asserting dominance over both the high school and newly arrived middle school players. His role is that of a brutal taskmaster who believes that only the strongest should survive to represent Japan. He plays a pivotal role in the Genius 10 Challenge, where he faces Kazuya Tokugawa in a rematch. This match showcases his destructive Glowing Shot and his mastery of asura-like abilities, ultimately pushing Tokugawa to his physical limit and beyond. He later competes as the singles one player in the semifinals against the powerful German team, showcasing his evolution and securing Japan's victory.

Key relationships shape Byodoin's character and history. His rivalry with Juujirou Oni is foundational; the scar on his forehead and his years of grueling training are direct results of their fateful match. He views Oni as a major rival and the catalyst for his own transformation. His dynamic with Kazuya Tokugawa is complex, as he brutally defeated Tokugawa the previous year and nearly destroyed his spirit, yet he later acknowledges Tokugawa's immense growth and dangerous potential. Duke Watanabe is his most loyal follower, having joined the Japanese team because of Byodoin's heroic act, and he remains one of the few people who can speak to Byodoin directly. He also comes into conflict with Echizen Ryoma, testing the young prodigy with powerful serves and later clashing with him when Ryoma interferes in his match against Tokugawa.

Byodoin undergoes significant development from a talented but compassionate player into a hardened warrior who believes strength alone is absolute. His early loss to Oni taught him the value of relentless training. However, the turning point came when he protected Duke's sister and subsequently lost the match for Japan, leading him to conclude that kindness is an unforgivable weakness in the world of competitive tennis. He dedicated himself to obtaining power from another dimension and adopted a ruthless philosophy. Despite this, his actions sometimes contradict his words, as he continues to give opportunities to players like Tokugawa and Akutsu to prove themselves, suggesting a deeper, more complicated nature beneath his violent exterior.

Byodoin possesses a diverse and devastating arsenal of tennis abilities. As the number one player in Japan, his power and technique are rated far beyond standard levels. His signature shot is the Glowing Shot, also known as Destruction, which is struck from beyond the racket's sweet spot and possesses enough force to destroy walls and inflict severe internal damage on an opponent. During his global training, he learned numerous World Techniques, each named after a different country, including Pirates of the World, Phoenix of Egypt, Snake Charmer of India, and many others. He has also mastered the Eighth Consciousness, a mental state that allows him to access an infinite number of strategic patterns and find the absolute path to victory. His inner aura manifests as a skeletal pirate, reflecting his self-given title as the Pirate of Japan, and he can summon a powerful Kijin Aura to overwhelm his foes. His off-the-charts mental fortitude is considered his greatest asset, having been forged through life-or-death training that even included surviving a lightning strike.
