OVA
Description
Kiroranke is a man of considerable complexity, whose outward appearance as a jovial and reliable companion masks a past as a ruthless revolutionary. Standing tall and muscular with the distinct hairstyle of the Sakhalin Ainu, he is in his early forties and possesses a calm, measured demeanor that often makes him appear laid-back and easy to approach. However, this friendly exterior conceals a shrewd and calculating strategist driven by deep-seated political ideals. He is capable of great warmth and bravery, showing genuine care for horses, rescuing his comrades from danger, and maintaining a deep, nostalgic love for his old friends. Yet, he is equally capable of cold-blooded betrayal and manipulation, believing wholeheartedly that his ultimate goal justifies any means necessary, including deceit and murder.
Kiroranke's background is rooted in the far reaches of the Russian Empire. Born Yulbars, a name meaning "tiger" in Turkic languages, he is of Tatar and Sakhalin Ainu heritage from the Amur River basin. As a teenager, he was a member of the radical revolutionary group People's Will and was directly involved in the assassination of Tsar Alexander II in 1881. Following the regime's brutal crackdown, he fled across Siberia and eventually became a partisan fighter for the independence of ethnic minorities in the Far East before escaping to Hokkaido. He later served as a combat engineer, or sapper, in the Imperial Japanese Army's 7th Division during the Russo-Japanese War, where he honed his skills with explosives. This military service provided him with a cover and a means to operate within Japan.
His true motivation for joining the hunt for the Ainu gold is not personal wealth but the procurement of military funds for a political revolution. He is a former comrade of Asirpa's father, Wilk, and the two shared a dream of uniting the minority peoples of the Russian Far East and Hokkaido against the imperial ambitions of both Russia and Japan. Kiroranke remained dedicated to this vision of creating an independent federation for these groups, a goal he felt Wilk ultimately abandoned. Consequently, his primary objective is to use the gold to finance this armed uprising and liberate his imprisoned revolutionary leader, Sofia Golden Hand.
In the story, Kiroranke initially presents himself as a loyal ally to Sugimoto and Asirpa, joining their group to retrieve the gold for the benefit of the Ainu people. He uses his survival skills, knowledge of the land, and expertise with explosives to aid them on their journey. However, his role shifts dramatically when his true allegiances are revealed. He conspires with Ogata to assassinate Wilk during the chaos of the Abashiri prison break, exposing himself as a traitor. Following this betrayal, he kidnaps Asirpa and flees to Sakhalin (Karafuto), hoping to mold her into the symbolic leader of his revolutionary movement and use her knowledge of the gold's location. His journey ends on the frozen ice floes of the north, where he is mortally wounded by his former allies. Before he dies, he finds a measure of peace in knowing that Asirpa has understood his and Wilk's legacy.
His key relationships are central to his character. His bond with Wilk is the most significant, evolving from a deep friendship and shared revolutionary struggle to bitter disillusionment, culminating in Kiroranke deciding to kill his old friend for betraying his ideals. He shares a long-standing, unrequited love for Sofia Golden Hand, their revolutionary leader, and his actions are partly motivated by a desire to rescue her and see her vision realized. His relationship with Asirpa is deeply manipulative; while he cares for her as the daughter of his comrade, he ultimately views her as a tool to achieve his political ends, intentionally guiding her to remember the code for the gold to further his own plans.
Throughout the narrative, Kiroranke undergoes a transformation in the eyes of the audience, from a trustworthy father figure to a morally ambiguous antagonist driven by a clear and unwavering ideology. His notable abilities include his expertise as a combat engineer, allowing him to construct tunnels, create improvised explosive devices, and booby traps. He is also a skilled horseman, a polyglot fluent in several languages including Japanese, Russian, and various Ainu dialects, and a capable hunter and survivalist. His calm under pressure and strategic thinking make him a formidable and unpredictable adversary.
