Description
Hyakunosuke Ogata is a central character known for his skills as a sniper and his deeply complex, often antagonistic role. He is introduced as a superior private serving in the 27th Regiment of the 7th Division of the Imperial Japanese Army, a veteran of the Russo-Japanese War. His nickname, the lone wildcat, reflects his solitary and independent nature, as he typically operates alone and aligns himself with different factions only as it suits his own purposes.

Ogata's background is marked by tragedy and violence, directly shaping his cold and calculating personality. He is the illegitimate son of an army general, Koujirou Hanazawa, and a concubine who was abandoned. Raised by his maternal grandmother in Ibaraki Prefecture after his mother fell into madness, Ogata's childhood was devoid of parental love. This upbringing instilled in him a twisted philosophy, most notably the belief that patricide is a necessary rite of passage into adulthood. He killed his own mother in an attempt to see if his father would come for her, murdered his honorable half-brother, Yuusaku Hanazawa, on the battlefield, and was later instigated by the manipulative Lieutenant Tsurumi to assassinate his father, making it appear as a suicide.

In terms of personality, Ogata is analytical, cold-blooded, and proud. He is habitually taciturn and inexpressive, observing situations from a distance to determine the most efficient and advantageous course of action. While he is ruthless and does not hesitate to kill, he is not impulsive, preferring to escape from a fight he cannot win rather than engage in reckless slaughter. On the surface, he can act amiable and polite to deceive others, but he is also prone to making caustic remarks and openly looking down on those he considers incompetent. A proud man, he dislikes being doubted and will accept a challenge to prove his skills. His worldview is deeply flawed; he cannot comprehend that others might feel guilt or remorse for killing and projects his own lack of empathy onto everyone around him, leading to a cognitive dissonance he struggles to resolve.

Ogata's role in the story is that of a wildcard. While he begins as a member of a rebel faction within the 7th Division that opposes Tsurumi, he is loyal only to himself and pursues the hidden Ainu gold for his own enigmatic reasons. He frequently comes into violent conflict with the protagonist, Saichi Sugimoto, whom he views as a major obstacle. In one of their early encounters, Sugimoto broke his arm and threw him off a cliff, resulting in a severe compound fracture of his jaw. The prominent surgical scar on his face, a permanent reminder of this near-fatal injury, becomes one of his most defining physical traits. Throughout the narrative, he moves between different groups, including Hijikata Toshizou's faction, but never forms genuine alliances, always acting on his own self-interest.

Key relationships define his actions. His hatred and resentment towards his father and half-brother, Yuusaku, are foundational, as he saw his brother's noble and compassionate nature as a direct challenge to his own nihilistic beliefs. His relationship with Lieutenant Tsurumi is one of manipulation; Tsurumi used Ogata's issues to orchestrate the assassination of General Hanazawa, though Ogata remains an insubordinate pawn. His rivalry with Sugimoto is both physical and ideological, as Sugimoto's humanity and will to live for others constantly contradicts Ogata's belief that all people are inherently selfish killers.

Over the course of the story, Ogata shows little traditional development or redemption, remaining a cold and solitary figure until the end. His lethal precision and his detached, philosophical cruelty are constants. Notable abilities include his extraordinary marksmanship. He is an expert sniper capable of accurately hitting targets within 300 meters using only the iron sights of his Type 30 rifle. He also possesses sharp hearing, being able to identify a person's rifle by the sound of its report, and he can speak Russian, a skill he often keeps hidden. Despite being a formidable sniper, he is notably weak in melee combat and relies on his wits and sniper rifle to keep out of close-quarters danger.
