Description
Perceval, also written Percival in some English materials, is the central protagonist of the anime Four Knights of the Apocalypse, the sequel series set sixteen years after the events of The Seven Deadly Sins. He is one of the four figures named in the prophecy of the Four Knights of the Apocalypse and holds the title of the Knight of Death.
Perceval is a short, childlike sixteen-year-old boy with green hair styled like bird wings and purple eyes. He spent his entire childhood in isolation on a remote land formation called God's Finger, living quietly with his grandfather Varghese, a former Holy Knight. Because he was raised away from other people, he enters the wider world knowing almost nothing about it, and his cheerful, energetic, and trusting nature reflects that sheltered upbringing. His peaceful life ends abruptly when the knight Ironside, who is revealed to be his father, kills Varghese. Perceval then sets out on a journey to find Ironside, to learn the truth behind his grandfather's death, and eventually to confront King Arthur Pendragon, the ruler of Camelot whom Ironside serves.
Perceval's origin carries a deeper mystery. He is not an ordinary human but a Life Spirit, a shapeless being described as a piece of the Great One, summoned into the body of a baby who had already died. Ironside had planned to use that body as a vessel for his own dying son, but Varghese fled with the infant and raised him with love, which allowed the Life Spirit to develop a personality and to lose all memory of its original nature. Perceval only learns the truth about himself during the journey into the Demon Realm. As a small child he had once wandered into that realm, where he survived its harsh environment, healed demons harmed by the rampaging creature called the Behemoth, and came to be hailed as the Savior of the Demon Realm. That experience also gave him the rare ability to understand and speak the demon language, and Zeldris, the Demon King, came to regard Perceval almost as a son.
In personality, Perceval is kind-hearted, naive, optimistic, and sincere. He trusts people easily, even those he has just met, and he approaches danger with simple courage rather than caution. His motivations grow from personal loss and curiosity into a deeper commitment to protect his friends and to reject the idea that he is meant to bring destruction. He refuses to accept the dark destiny assigned to him by prophecy and instead chooses to use his powers to defend others. This core belief shapes almost everything he does throughout the story.
Within the story, Perceval is the leader of the Percival Platoon, a group that includes Donny, Nasiens, and Anne, with Lancelot, at first disguised as the fox Sin, acting as their guide and protector. The group travels across Britannia, comes into conflict with the Holy Knights of Camelot, and eventually reaches the kingdom of Liones, where the four knights gather and where King Meliodas formally appoints Perceval and his companions as Holy Knights. As the Knight of Death, Perceval is repeatedly targeted by King Arthur's forces, and much of the narrative follows his struggle against Camelot and his attempts to prove that the prophecy does not have to define him. Despite having a humbler background than the other three knights, he becomes the one who unites them.
Perceval's key relationships shape his growth. His grandfather Varghese gave him the love and training that formed his character, and his death provides the emotional foundation for Perceval's journey. His father Ironside is the opposite pole, a cold and violent man who despises Perceval and serves as both antagonist and source of painful truth. Among his companions, Donny shares a brotherly bond with him and often lightens the mood with his cowardice and humor, while Nasiens, a skilled herbalist, is deeply devoted to Perceval and will risk everything for his safety. Anne, a disciplined young woman with the ability to detect lies, acts as an older-sister figure and a moral anchor for the group. Lancelot serves as mentor and longtime friend, watching over Perceval from their first meeting. The recurring Camelot knight Pellegarde also takes an almost paternal interest in Perceval despite being an enemy, offering a contrast to Ironside's hatred. The other two knights, Tristan and Gawain, gradually come to respect Perceval and fight alongside him against Arthur.
Perceval develops considerably over the course of the series. At the start he is an inexperienced and sheltered boy whose fighting skills come mainly from training with his grandfather. His magical power, called Hope, awakens during a difficult battle against Pellegarde, allowing him to turn the fight around and revealing his natural talent as a Holy Knight. As he travels, he grows from a trusting child into a courageous leader who carries the heavy burden of a prophecy that labels him a harbinger of world destruction. In the climax of the first major conflict, he gives up his human existence and returns to the state of a Life Spirit in order to stop his enemy. That sacrifice is reversed two years later when his companions bring him back, with Nasiens having watched over his body throughout that time, and Perceval resumes his role as the hero of the story.
Perceval's notable abilities center on his rare magic of the Hero type, called Hope. This power allows him to draw on the hopes and faith of those around him and convert their vital energy into magical energy, which takes the form of a greenish aura around his body. The aura is highly versatile and can be shaped according to his intent. He can use it to heal severe injuries within seconds, to strengthen his own speed, strength, and endurance, to create defensive barriers, to grant flight to himself and others, and to form constructs such as miniature versions of himself that become swords, wings, or shields. These constructs, sometimes described as golems, can also serve practical purposes such as tracking enemies or drawing their attention. As the Knight of Death, Perceval is able to bring himself back after suffering fatal wounds. He also possesses a mysterious ability to mummify anyone he touches, an effect that only his own magic can undo, though he has used it only once and without conscious intent when he believed his friends had died. He shows unusually high endurance and pain tolerance, can survive attacks that would kill ordinary people, resists the effects of magical drugs and sleeping chemicals, and has fine control over his breathing, which grants him remarkable speed. His grandfather trained him in swordsmanship and archery, making him a skilled fighter even before his magic awakened. His weapons include a sword made from a piece of the Coffin of Eternal Darkness, an A-rated magic sword called Ouroboros that can change shape, and a primary blade known as the Dragon Handle.
