Description
Baek Yoonho is a prominent supporting character in Solo Leveling Season 2 -Arise from the Shadow-, recognized as one of South Korea's ten S-Rank hunters and the guild master of the prestigious White Tiger Guild. He was formerly a member of the Fiend Guild before leaving to establish his own organization, which would become one of the most powerful hunter guilds in the country. Yoonho has short, red hair that falls to his ears and red eyes, and he typically presents a professional, elegant appearance in well-tailored suits, which sharply contrasts with the feral transformations he undergoes in battle.
In terms of personality, Yoonho initially appears distant and indifferent toward other hunters, paying little attention to Sung Jinwoo at first. However, he possesses a keen sense of observation and intelligence, quickly recognizing exceptional talent when he sees it. After the Red Gate incident, where several members of his guild were killed and Jinwoo emerged as the sole survivor, Yoonho became intensely curious about Jinwoo's abilities and was among the first to theorize that Jinwoo might be a growth-type hunter with no limits to his potential. He demonstrates strong camaraderie and loyalty, particularly toward his guild members, and was willing to confront the American hunter Hwang Dongsoo when one of his men was harmed. Yoonho also shows a protective side as a family man, with his daughter Baek Miho later serving as vice leader of the White Tiger Guild. He respects his elders and mentors deeply, particularly Sung Il-Hwan, with whom he worked as a firefighter, and he carries forward the philosophy of saving lives and acting as a hero.
Yoonho's motivations center on protecting people and fulfilling his duty as a hunter. Beyond his career as an S-Rank hunter, he has also worked as a firefighter to continue helping others even when temporarily away from active hunting. His sense of justice and commitment to safeguarding civilians remain consistent throughout the story, and he continues this mission even in later events. In the story, Yoonho plays a significant role in several major arcs. He is first prominently featured during the Red Gate incident, where members of his guild are killed by elves and the few survivors are saved by Sung Jinwoo. He later appears at the Hunter Association when Jinwoo undergoes re-evaluation and is officially certified as an S-Rank hunter; Yoonho and Choi Jong-In both attempt to recruit Jinwoo, leading to a friendly rivalry between the two guild masters. Yoonho's most notable participation occurs during the Jeju Island raid, where he joins the main attack force to eliminate the giant ants threatening the island, fighting on the front lines against S-Rank enemies and unleashing his full bestial power, though he ultimately becomes overwhelmed and requires Jinwoo's intervention to be saved.
Yoonho maintains key relationships with several important characters. He shares a friendly but competitive dynamic with Choi Jong-In, the master of the Fame Guild, as both seek to recruit Sung Jinwoo. He holds deep respect for Sung Il-Hwan, having worked alongside him as a firefighter and considering him a trusted mentor. His relationship with Sung Jinwoo evolves significantly over time: from initial indifference to growing curiosity, then to respect for both Jinwoo's power and his moral character, ultimately accepting Jinwoo's central role in critical confrontations. He also shares memories with fellow hunter Min Byung-Gu, with whom he drinks before the Jeju Island raid. In later story events following the Cup of Reincarnation, Yoonho does not regain his memories of the previous timeline like some others do, but he remains close to former allies and attends Sung Jinwoo and Cha Hae-In's wedding. In the sequel series Ragnarok, he is initially wary of Sung Suho before recognizing him as the grandson of his respected mentor Sung Il-Hwan, and he goes on to re-establish his guild while continuing to embody the heroic ideals he learned from those he admires.
Regarding his notable abilities, Yoonho specializes in a unique form of magical beast transformation. This power allows him to partially or fully transform into a powerful white beast, gaining enhanced physical strength, speed, agility, sharp claws, and improved durability. The ability is mythologically inspired by the Byakko, or Baekho, the legendary White Tiger guardian of the West in East Asian mythology. In combat, Yoonho typically prefers partial transformations, keeping a mostly human appearance to maintain control and balance between offense and defense. However, against formidable enemies such as during the Jeju Island raid, he unleashes his full transformation, becoming a white, tiger-like creature of immense ferocity, though this complete transformation comes at the cost of temporarily losing his rational control. He also possesses a sensory ability known as the Eyes of the Beast, which allows him to see and evaluate the strength and magical power of other individuals, monsters, and gates with remarkable accuracy. Using this ability, he was able to perceive Sung Jinwoo's rapidly growing magical power and recognize that Jinwoo was growing stronger at an extraordinary rate.
