Description
Haein Cha is a central character in the story, known as the vice-guild master of the Hunters Guild and one of South Korea's most powerful S-rank hunters. She is recognized as the strongest female hunter in the country and, unofficially, the third-strongest hunter overall, surpassed only by Sung Jinwoo and a later successor to a prominent chairman. Before awakening her powers, she was a talented track-and-field athlete whose career was cut short by an ankle injury. Following the appearance of the Gates, she awakened as Korea's ninth S-rank hunter.
In appearance, Haein is an attractive young woman with gray eyes and a distinctive blonde bob haircut with bangs. She typically wears red-themed armor on raids and carries a black sword with a silver hilt. When utilizing her abilities, her eyes glow yellow. She has a slender build and is relatively short in stature.
Haein possesses a rare and unique constitution that allows her to perceive mana through smell. To her, the mana emitted by most hunters and magical beasts has a disgustingly foul and overwhelming odor, which often forces her to cover her nose with a handkerchief. Sung Jinwoo is the sole exception to this, as his mana smells fragrant and pleasant to her. This striking anomaly immediately captures her curiosity and draws her attention to him from their very first encounter. Her ability is not just a quirk but allows her to sense powerful presences and is tied to the purity of a person's mana.
Her personality is characterized by seriousness and diligence. She is extremely dedicated to her work and self-improvement, even sacrificing her rest time to patrol dungeons and ensure the safety of lower-ranked mining and hauling teams who cannot defend themselves. Despite her immense power as an S-rank, she is modest and lacks prejudice against lower-ranked hunters. She trains in swordsmanship under a C-rank master, Song Chi-Yul, whose technical skill she deeply admires. She is straightforward and earnest but becomes notably shy, awkward, and easily flustered in romantic or socially unexpected situations, such as when Jinwoo teased her about carrying a pickaxe into battle. She is known to have few friends and struggles with social situations outside of dungeon raiding.
Her primary motivation is a strong sense of responsibility to protect other hunters and civilians, throwing herself into danger without hesitation. This duty extends to her role as the Hunters Guild's vice-guild master, a position she holds under the leadership of the S-rank mage Choi Jong-In. Her personal motivations evolve as she becomes increasingly intrigued by Sung Jinwoo. Her curiosity about why he is the only hunter who smells pleasant leads her to investigate him. Over time, particularly after he saves her life, her interest deepens into strong romantic feelings and a desire to stand beside him as an equal.
In combat, Haein is a close-combat S-rank hunter who specializes in swordsmanship. Her fighting style is swift, fluid, and graceful, leading to her nickname, "The Dancer," which she personally finds embarrassing. Key techniques include the Sword Dance, a series of attacks performed with the pacing of a dance, and the Blade of Light, an attack that involves manifesting a solid sword made of pure light. She is also very stealthy, capable of approaching Sung Jinwoo without being noticed. Her raw power is such that Sung Jinwoo analyzed her to be stronger than her own guild master, and Goto Ryuji, a powerful Japanese hunter, recognized her as the only truly useful Korean S-rank for a major raid. She is able to easily defeat one of Jinwoo's elite shadow soldiers, Igris, and put up a respectable fight against the much more powerful Beru.
Her role in the story is pivotal during the Jeju Island ant raid. While other hunters collapse under the overwhelming presence of the Ant King, Haein is the only one who remains standing, marking her as its first target. She is brutally struck and knocked unconscious, suffering life-threatening injuries. Sung Jinwoo arrives on the island using Shadow Exchange and saves her life by turning the healer Min Byung-Gyu into a shadow soldier to use his healing magic on her. This event solidifies her feelings for him. Throughout the series, she develops from a curious and cautious observer of Jinwoo into his primary love interest. Her persistence and genuine care leave a strong impression on him, and she eventually becomes his wife and the mother of their son, Sung Suho. Her unique sense for mana is so intrinsic to her that it persists even across altered timelines.
