Description
Kametaro Tsuruyama is a famous and highly accomplished animator who served as the director of the fictional film A Tale of Perishing. She was a virtuoso in her field, working at Konkon Studio, and her work had a profound impact on the protagonist, Natsuko Hirose, who grew up admiring her film. Tsuruyama's death occurs prior to the main events of the story, as she is found deceased in her home due to food poisoning after relatives became concerned about her sudden lack of communication.
Following her death, Tsuruyama is reincarnated within the world of her own creation, A Tale of Perishing. In this new existence, she appears not as a human but as a small, talking bird. This bird form has a distinctive appearance, notably wearing a shell on its back, and her arms have become wings. Despite this dramatic physical transformation, she adapts to her new body with a sense of calm and shows no overt distress over her situation.
In this world, Tsuruyama is initially an unseen presence before revealing herself as a persistent and pestering figure who frequently appears before Natsuko. Her personality in this new form is markedly cold, strict, and often petty. She constantly repeats the phrase "It's no use," discouraging Natsuko from her actions. Tsuruyama's primary motivation is to preserve the integrity of her original story, A Tale of Perishing. She firmly believes that the narrative is destined to end with the death of the hero, Luke Braveheart, and she vehemently disapproves of any changes Natsuko makes to the plot. She becomes enraged by these alterations, seeing them as a violation of her creative work, and even goes so far as to try to destroy Natsuko's storyboarding pegboard out of frustration. She represents a rigid view of artistic integrity, arguing that not every story needs a happy ending, and that the tragic conclusion she wrote is the correct one. This stance puts her in direct opposition to Natsuko, who is determined to save the characters and create a happier outcome.
The relationship between Tsuruyama and Natsuko is central to her role in the narrative. While Natsuko is a huge fan of Tsuruyama and her work, the reincarnated director reacts to Natsuko's attempts to rewrite her story with annoyance and a sense of betrayal. Tsuruyama demands that the plot unfold exactly as she wrote it, leading to a tense and complex dynamic between the two creators. She insists that the ending is immutable and that Natsuko should find a way to return to her own world. However, Tsuruyama is confused by the fact that she was reincarnated as a bird while Natsuko retains her human form upon entering the same world.
Despite her efforts to enforce the original ending, Tsuruyama is unsuccessful. As Natsuko continues to change the story, ultimately leading to a happy conclusion where Luke survives, Tsuruyama is shown to be the sole figure who is not happy with this outcome. In a final statement of her philosophy, she declares that "happy endings aren't everything in entertainment," a line that encapsulates her belief in the value of tragic and bittersweet narratives. While Natsuko is eventually transported back to the real world, Tsuruyama chooses to remain in the anime world she created.
Regarding abilities, Kametaro Tsuruyama possesses several notable skills, even in her bird form. Despite her wings having replaced her arms, she retains her ability to draw at super-fast speeds. She also carries and uses a stopwatch to precisely measure the duration of conversations, a peculiar habit that highlights her methodical and controlling nature.
