Description
Kūsetsu is a member of the Eight Thunder Gods, also known as the Hachiraishin, a group of eight immensely powerful beings that rule over the demonic realm of Mato and command the Shuki. She first appears in an immature larval state resembling a large egg with legs and wings. To develop and gain strength, she absorbs living beings into her body, using them as fuel and inheriting their physical traits, personalities, and superhuman abilities. After absorbing several powerful female warriors from the Anti-Demon Corps, most notably Naon Yuno, Koko Zenibako, and later Mira Kamiunten, Kūsetsu takes on a humanoid form. Her appearance then features a crown of small horns, a white long-sleeved kimono, gloves wrapped around her two middle fingers, and a series of dots below her eyes that represent the number of individuals she has absorbed. When she enters a powered-up state, her hair becomes longer and more wild, her eyes turn black, and two large horns replace the crown on her forehead.

Kūsetsu's personality is a blend of confidence in her own strength and beauty, derived from the warriors she has consumed, and a marked immaturity that stems from her being the youngest of the Thunder Gods. She is curious, impulsive, and prone to acting on her desires without much restraint, which sometimes leads to reckless behavior, such as venturing into the human world against the advice of her elder siblings. She is also quick to anger and can be dismissive of those she views as inferior, showing no hesitation in physically retaliating against those who look down on her. Despite her youth and impulsiveness, she is strong-willed and fiercely loyal to the Eight Thunder Gods, refusing to reveal their secrets even when vulnerable. After her physical body is destroyed, her spirit comes to reside within the protagonist, Yuuki Wakura, after he ingests a drop of god from her. In this spiritual state, she becomes a persistent and mischievous presence in his inner world, frequently appearing nude and attempting to seduce him out of a mix of genuine curiosity about human intimacy and a desire to make him more comfortable with women. She also demonstrates a pragmatic and protective side, warning Yuuki against engaging certain other Thunder Gods while still refusing to divulge the group's deeper plans.

Kūsetsu's primary motivation as an antagonist is to nourish herself and grow stronger by absorbing powerful humans, and she aligns with the Thunder Gods' overarching goal of punishing humanity for invading Mato and harvesting its peaches without permission. This drive makes her a direct threat to the Anti-Demon Corps. However, her role shifts significantly after her defeat. Following the destruction of her physical form, she becomes an unconventional ally trapped within Yuuki's consciousness. In this role, she acts as an observer, a commentator, and sometimes a guide, offering cryptic warnings and using her abilities to interact with him in his dreams. Her presence introduces a complex dynamic to the story, as she is neither fully an enemy nor a friend, but an unpredictable entity with her own interests.

In terms of key relationships, Kūsetsu treats the other Thunder Gods as siblings, referring to Shikoku and Jouryuu with affectionate terms such as Shikoku-nee and Jouryuu-nee. She is the youngest among them and is often humored or cautioned by her elders. Her relationship with Yuuki Wakura is the most significant and unusual. Initially, she views him as prey and a potential vessel for experimentation. After her spirit resides within him, their relationship becomes one of forced proximity, marked by her relentless teasing, her attempts to manipulate his dreams for her own amusement, and an underlying, unspoken reliance on him for her continued existence. She also has a notable connection to the warriors she absorbed, as their wills can sometimes resist her control from within.

Kūsetsu undergoes a distinct form of development from a bestial, larval predator into a more articulate and, in some ways, more complex being after absorbing and integrating the traits of humanoid Shuki. Her defeat and transformation into a spirit within Yuuki force her to adapt to a passive role, shifting her from a direct physical threat to an internal presence that must coexist with her former enemy. This transition compels her to learn about human psychology and to form a strange, contentious bond with her host.

Kūsetsu possesses a formidable array of abilities, most of which are derived from her core power of absorption. Her absorption ability allows her to consume living beings and take on their characteristics, abilities, and even aspects of their personality. This has granted her specific powers such as Hidden Beauty, which is the ability to phase through any object, taken from Naon Yuno, and a liquefaction ability that nullifies physical strikes, taken from Koko Zenibako. She can also use a cloning technique called Scarlet Regiment, though her clones are significantly weaker than her own body, and she can fire a volley of feathers from her kimono that can render targets unconscious, immobilize them, or allow her to control them. Beyond these stolen talents, she possesses innate Thunder God abilities, including flight, rapid movement, and the ability to transform her hand into a scaled claw charged with devastating energy. Her full-power strike, called Divine Punishment, possesses immense destructive force, and she can augment it further with a multiplication technique called Million-Layered Divine Punishment. Crucially, she can produce a special droplet from her saliva known as a drop of god, which allows her spirit to survive and reside within a host's spiritual space even if her physical body is destroyed. In this incorporeal state within Yuuki, she can manipulate his dreams, observe his memories, and communicate with him, but she cannot physically harm him or escape on her own.
