Description
Gyokuyou is a high-ranking consort of the Emperor of Li and one of the central figures in the inner palace. She is known for her striking appearance, which includes gently wavy reddish hair and jade-green eyes, a look that reflects her mixed heritage as the daughter of a powerful regional lord and a foreign dancer from the west. Her beauty is considered exceptional, and she is associated with the color red and the element of fire among the four highest consorts.

Her personality is characterized by a calm, bright, and gentle demeanor. Often reacting to situations with a soft smile and a light-hearted "Oh my~," she maintains a relaxed and warm presence even during stressful times. Beneath this pleasant exterior, however, Gyokuyou is extremely prudent, intelligent, and politically shrewd. Her cautious nature is a survival mechanism honed by the dangerous intrigues of the court; she has survived at least two poisoning attempts, an experience that taught her to always keep her guard up. Despite this vigilance, she is not cold. She is deeply kind and fosters loyalty by treating those around her with empathy and consideration, such as compensating a wet nurse for an accident rather than punishing her.

Gyokuyou was born into the powerful Yang family in the western capital. As the youngest of thirteen siblings and a half-sister to most of them, she had a difficult childhood, particularly with her brothers who looked down on her foreign heritage. Her father recognized her talents early on and raised her to be a consort. Recommended by Jinshi for her intelligence and grace, she was brought to the rear palace where she quickly became the Emperor's favorite. At the beginning of the story, she is already a young mother to a daughter named Lingli. Her position is further solidified when she later gives birth to a son, who is named the Crown Prince, leading to her elevation to the prestigious role of Empress.

Her primary motivation is the safety and well-being of her children, as well as her own survival within the palace's political hierarchy. She is acutely aware that her role is both a privilege and a strategic position to secure her family's influence. While she fulfills her duties to the Emperor with grace, she holds no romantic illusions about her arranged marriage. She finds personal enjoyment not in political maneuvering but in observing the relationships and mysteries around her, displaying a mischievous curiosity, especially regarding the dynamic between Jinshi and the apothecary Maomao.

Gyokuyou's most significant relationship is with Maomao. After Maomao secretly warned her of a poisoning attempt, Gyokuyou hired her as a personal food taster and servant. A deep bond of trust and mutual respect formed between them, with Gyokuyou viewing Maomao as a benefactor and enjoying her eccentric knowledge and skills. She also shares a unique rapport with Jinshi. Unlike others who treat him with envy or professional distance, Gyokuyou treats him like a friend, playfully teasing him about his feelings for Maomao. This genuine and easy-going friendship makes her one of the few people with whom Jinshi can let his guard down. She maintains a small, loyal staff, initially relying on her head maid Hongniang and three other attendants, favoring trust and quality over quantity.

Gyokuyou's primary ability lies in her strategic intelligence and her skill at navigating palace intrigues. Her most notable feat is surviving multiple assassination attempts, which she has done through sheer vigilance and cleverness. A skilled observer, she can read people's intentions and often correctly deduces hidden feelings and plots. She also possesses the political acumen to discreetly manage her household and protect her interests without drawing unwanted attention. Rather than physical or magical abilities, her strengths are her composure, empathy, and an unshakeable, quiet resilience that allows her to thrive in a perilous environment.
