Masaki Ward is the second son in the Ward family, a household known for its exceptional survival skills and long‑standing experience with cats. He works alongside his father, Kouji, and his older brother, Len, to gather supplies in a world ravaged by a virus that transforms humans into cats upon physical contact. Masaki has black hair that is long and covers one of his eyes, and blue eyes. He typically wears a black coat and pants over a green shirt. His signature weapons are a pair of blue, dolphin‑shaped pistols.
Masaki is regarded within his family as the smart one, balancing wit and empathy. He is stoic and reliable, serving as a steady presence for those around him. He understands the risks of the Nyandemic and strictly follows safety protocols to avoid infection. His primary motivation is to survive and protect his brother Len, as well as to contribute to the broader effort to find a cure or deterrent against the cat threat.
In the story, Masaki initially goes missing with his father and brother while scavenging at a mall. After being overwhelmed by cats, he and Len take refuge in a storage room. Their father is infected while buying them time to escape. Masaki and Len are later discovered by a group of survivors led by a green‑furred Devon Rex cat, and they join the trio to continue gathering supplies and find a way out of the city. Subsequently, Masaki acts as Len’s field support and physical protector, implementing practical applications of Len’s research—such as testing new deterrents against the hordes of cats. He also coordinates with Kaoru on tactical defense strategies for their research outposts.
