Description
Julius Reinberg is a 16-year-old student in his sixth and final year at the Regarden Magic Academy, where he consistently ranks among the top three mages of his class. A member of the Lizans race, he stands approximately 174cm tall and is easily recognized by his wavy cyan hair and matching eyes, which complement his refined and handsome features. His standard attire consists of the academy's student robe, which he adorns with a distinctive rose-shaped ornament made of real ice, alongside a bolo tie and a belt. When out of uniform, he dresses in formal wear such as dress shirts, trousers, and a tie secured with an oval pin. As his primary magical focus, he wields the Blue Mirror Wand and carries a talisman given to him by a maid from his childhood.
Born into a noble family, Julius's current personality is a direct result of a painful experience during his youth. As a child, he was known to be naturally kind and caring, but his heart was hardened after his first love, an older maid named Anna who worked in his household, married another man. This rejection caused him to abandon his gentle former self and adopt a cold, rebellious, and defensive attitude. In his daily life at the academy, Julius displays a high degree of narcissism and pride, fitting the typical demeanor of a noble. He tends to look down on anyone he considers inferior, is openly sarcastic, and holds particularly racist views against dwarves, once telling them to leave the country. However, despite his arrogance, he possesses a hidden, more caring side that occasionally surfaces. This inner nature is most notably drawn out through his interactions with the protagonist, Will Serfort, leading Julius to become a genuine, if still sharp-tongued, friend and ally over time.
Julius's central motivation is his ambition to become the successor of the legendary ice mage Elfaria Albis Serfort, one of the five most powerful mages known as the Magia Vander. This drive pushes him to master the most complex ice magic, including Elfaria's own original spells. At the same time, he is acutely aware of his own status as a "leftover" for still being at the academy, and he is constantly striving to grow stronger to achieve his goal. His presence in the story primarily functions as a rival and foil to Will Serfort, whom he initially despises for being incapable of using magic. This antagonistic relationship begins when Julius humiliates Will and his dwarf friends at a tavern, leading to a wager that forces Julius to participate in the upcoming Grand Magic Festival. The resulting confrontation is a turning point, as Will defeats Julius by exploiting the flaws in his ultimate ice spell, Ars Weiss, and revealing that the magic was created by Elfaria when she was only two years old, a fact that deeply shatters Julius's pride.
Following his defeat, Julius is forced to fulfill his end of the bet, apologizing to the dwarves and taking a job as a dishwasher in their tavern as penance for his actions. This humbling experience marks the beginning of his character development, allowing his underlying kindness to re-emerge as he forms an unlikely bond with Will. While he never stops making sarcastic comments, he transitions from a bitter rival into a loyal supporter and true friend. His other significant relationships include a fierce rivalry with his classmate Sion Ulster, a fire magic user, and a childhood friendship with Emma Klever, which later ties his fate to a dangerous mystery. Ultimately, after graduating and joining the Ice Faction as a high-ranking mage, Julius is assigned to investigate the dangerous Book of Ruin. While conducting undercover work, he notices strange changes in his childhood friend Emma, a discovery that leads to him being killed by the villain Shade, leaving his death as a pivotal mystery for Will to uncover.
As a mage, Julius Reinberg is exceptionally gifted in the use of ice magic, capable of casting both low and mid-tier spells with ease. His range of abilities includes offensive techniques like Xelunea Caulis, which drops a massive block of ice on a target, and defensive spells such as Glace Itier and Fridde Gardinas, which summons low-level guardian birds made of ice. His signature achievement is being the first and only mage to replicate one of Elfaria's legendary twelve ice magics, known as the El Glace Frosse. Specifically, he can cast the First Law, Ars Weiss, also called the White Art, which allows him to create ice clones of himself that can also perform magic. However, this spell is currently imperfect; his clones require conscious control, which he cannot do with many at once without assistance, and they leave revealing ice crystals on their feet that betray their artificial nature. His most powerful attack is Armenta Auliscas, a high-grade spell that generates a devastating ice barrage but requires a long incantation, a weakness he cleverly overcomes by having his ice clones perform the chant for him in battle. Despite these limitations, his talent allows him to reach the 6th floor of the dungeon, a notable achievement for a student.
