Description
Julius Reinberg is a prominent character in the anime Wistoria: Wand and Sword, recognized as a top-tier student at the Rigarden Magic Academy. At sixteen years old, he stands at 174 centimeters tall and is a member of the Lizans race. With his wavy cyan hair and matching eyes, Julius presents a refined and handsome appearance, typically wearing the academy’s student robe adorned with a rose-shaped ornament made of ice, which he can utilize in combat. His noble bearing is further accentuated by accessories such as a bolo tie and, in casual settings, a dress shirt with an oval pin.

On the surface, Julius Reinberg is defined by his immense pride and narcissistic demeanor. As a noble and a prodigy in ice magic, he projects an air of superiority, often looking down upon those he considers weaker or less talented. This arrogant and cold personality, however, is largely a defensive facade. In his childhood, Julius was kind and caring, but his heart was hardened following an unrequited first love for an older maid in his household, who eventually married another man. This personal heartbreak caused him to adopt a rebellious and cynical attitude. Despite his harsh exterior, he possesses a deeply caring nature and is capable of looking after others, a softer side that occasionally surfaces, particularly during his interactions with the protagonist, Will Serfort.

Julius’s primary motivation within the academy is to become the successor to Elfaria Albis Serfort, the legendary Ice Princess and one of the powerful Magia Vander. This goal stems from his specialization in ice magic, as he aims to follow in the footsteps of the mage he most admires. This ambition directly fuels his intense rivalry with Will Serfort. Julius initially despises Will, viewing him with contempt as a magicless student who does not belong in a prestigious academy. This disdain extends to dwarves and other non-magical races, as he holds openly prejudiced views against them. His rivalry with Will culminates in a significant wager during the Grand Magic Festival, where his pride is severely wounded.

Within the story’s structure, Julius serves as a formidable rival who challenges the protagonist’s unconventional path. His role transitions from a primary antagonist to a more complex figure and, later, to a tragic one. The pivotal moment in his development occurs during his battle with Will at the Grand Magic Festival. Confident in his ability to wield Ars Weiss, the First Law of Elfaria’s secret ice magic, Julius is humiliated when Will not only defeats him but also reveals that the spell was created by Elfaria when she was only two years old and is inherently flawed. Following this defeat, Julius honors his end of the wager by working as a dishwasher in the dwarves’ tavern as an act of penance, marking the beginning of his character growth and a grudging respect for Will.

In terms of abilities, Julius Reinberg is an exceptionally gifted mage, graduating third in his class at the academy. He specializes in low- and mid-tier ice magic and wields the Bluemirror Wand. His most notable feat is being the first mage to successfully replicate one of Elfaria Albis Serfort’s original spells, the First Law Ars Weiss, even if it is incomplete. This spell allows him to create ice clones of himself that can cast magic, though it requires immense concentration and support to control effectively. Other ice spells in his arsenal include Xelunea Caulis, which drops a large block of ice on a target, and Eisplosion, which causes his clones to explode and freeze opponents. He also possesses common magic techniques such as Search, which allows him to detect people or monsters within a certain radius. Despite his talents, his magic has precise limitations, such as the formation of ice crystals on his clones' feet due to imperfect temperature control, which skilled opponents like Will can exploit.

His key relationships are central to his character arc. Beyond his rivalry with Will Serfort, Julius has a competitive dynamic with Sion Ulster, a fellow top student who wields fire magic. He shares a deep, childhood friendship with Emma Klever, which later becomes a crucial element of his fate. He is also looked upon by the Ice Faction as the most likely successor to Elfaria, a dream he desperately pursues. Following his graduation, Julius becomes an advanced mage and is assigned to an undercover mission to investigate his own Faction. During this mission, he discovers disturbing changes in his childhood friend, Emma. Before he can act on this information or reveal the truth, he is killed by the entity known as Shade, who was protecting Emma’s secret. When Will Serfort later discovers his body, he notes anomalies beyond just the killer’s presence, suggesting that a larger mystery is tied to Julius Reinberg’s demise.
