Description
Kōta Shimura is a high school student who occupies the lowest rung of his school's social hierarchy. He lives in poverty with a sick mother whose medical bills weigh heavily on him, and he works part-time at a fast food restaurant to help cover the costs. At school he is persistently targeted by bullies, leaving him both physically and emotionally battered. His dream is to launch a successful NewTube channel that could generate enough income to support his family.

A chance incident alters his life: during a fight with a school bully, the altercation is accidentally streamed live to an online audience, and the broadcast unexpectedly draws a large number of viewers. Recognising that fighting can be a source of money, Kōta begins to pursue this path deliberately. With the encouragement of a classmate who offers to be his cameraman, he launches a live-streaming channel called Self-Taught Fighting. To improve his combat skills, he studies the videos of a mysterious masked man who runs a channel with virtually no followers, treating the anonymous figure as his virtual mentor.

Kōta’s personality is marked by a quiet determination that grows into fierce resolve. He is initially timid and downtrodden, but the pressure of his circumstances forces him to become resourceful and persistent. Once he commits to fighting, he displays a near-superhuman pain tolerance and an almost boundless tenacity, refusing to give up as long as he believes victory is possible. He adapts quickly to new techniques and learns from each opponent, compensating for his lack of natural strength with stubbornness and ingenuity.

In the story, Kōta is the protagonist whose journey from victim to viral sensation drives the narrative. His role highlights the intersection of poverty, bullying, and the digital age, where a teenager’s struggle for survival can be turned into entertainment. He grows by confronting increasingly dangerous adversaries, each fight pushing him to refine his abilities and expand his understanding of what he is willing to do for his family.

Key relationships shape his progress. His classmate and cameraman provides the technical support and encouragement needed to keep the channel running. A junior student becomes his editor, helping polish the raw fight footage into viral content. A fellow fighter emerges both as a rival and a catalyst for further growth. Kōta’s bond with his ill mother underpins everything he does; her hospital bills are the urgent motivation that drives him to keep fighting and streaming.

Notable abilities include his extraordinary capacity to absorb punishment and remain standing, his talent for reading opponents’ movements mid-fight, and his skill at applying the lessons of the mysterious online mentor. He is not a naturally gifted brawler but compensates with relentless practice and a willingness to endure pain that would incapacitate most people. Over the course of the series, he develops from a scrawny outsider into a disciplined and resourceful fighter who learns to turn his vulnerability into a weapon.
