Description
Hinami Watarai is a central character in Nukitashi the Animation. She is a third-year student at Mizunotsuki Academy, which makes her an upperclassman to most of the main cast, but her most distinguishing feature is her extremely petite and youthful appearance, standing only 139 centimeters tall. Due to her small stature, flat chest, and delicate features, she is constantly mistaken for a child, a misunderstanding that frustrates her to no end and leads to her frequent, passionate protests that she is not a loli.
Despite her childlike looks, Hinami possesses a personality that is mature, caring, and deeply kind-hearted. She has strong motherly instincts and a desire to look after others, which often manifests in her trying to fulfill the role of a supportive big sister figure within her group. She is academically brilliant, considered one of the top students in her school, and shows a great deal of earnestness and responsibility. Beneath her gentle exterior, however, lies a hidden insecurity. Because no one ever approaches her romantically, she has internalized this rejection, incorrectly believing it is because she is flat-chested and unattractive, rather than recognizing that others are simply misled by her youthful appearance or are afraid of breaking strict local laws regarding intimacy with minors.
Hinami was raised on Seiran Island, where she was taught that sexual acts with minors are strictly forbidden. This law, combined with her looks, has made her feel isolated and unwanted. She was saved from an attack by a predatory tourist by the NLNS group, which eventually leads her to join their cause. Within the NLNS, she holds the identification number ATM-03 and serves as a main attacker, or DPS. While she is not physically strong in a conventional sense, she compensates with her ingenuity and a unique trademark: a folding chair. She always carries this chair to reach high places, but in combat, she uses it as an effective improvised weapon to block attacks, parry bullets, and fight back, a skill attributed to her legendary affinity with the Chair God.
Her most significant relationship is with Rei Tadasugawa, her childhood friend and the strict wind discipline leader. Rei has always looked out for her, lending her romance comics from the mainland and protecting her purity from the shadows.
