Description
Fumino Kotoyose is a main heroine from the visual novel series Nukitashi, which received an anime adaptation. She is a mysterious girl with a slender build and a height of 147 centimeters, born on February 21 with AB blood type. Her appearance is notable for her very pale, translucent hair and unusual eyes that are described as being able to see through everything. Due to her circumstances, she often wears a male school uniform and a beret to pass as a boy at Mizunotsuki Academy, though she also frequently appears in a refined kimono.

Fumino is defined by her absolute inability to lie, being straightforward and honest to a fault. Her speech is polite and old-fashioned, and she frequently uses the catchphrase mube mube, which she inherited from her mother. Despite her quiet and reserved demeanor, she is highly educated and exceptionally intelligent, with academic abilities that surpass even the protagonist, Junnosuke Tachibana. She is deeply loyal to those she chooses to serve, viewing all acts of service, including household chores and even sexual intimacy, as a source of joy for a maid. Her personality is also marked by a fascination with human intimacy and a tendency toward self-sacrifice. In her daily life, she enjoys hobbies such as concentrating on knitting and is skilled at Japanese-style cooking, though she cannot cook non-Japanese cuisine and cannot swim. She also has a unique sleeping pattern, functioning as a short sleeper who requires very little rest.

The character's background is tragic and central to the plot. She is the secret, illegitimate child of the prefectural governor Toshiaki Nira and a mistress named Fumika Kotoyose, who is the daughter of a powerful elder known as the Sakimori Old Man. As a child, she left her father's side with her mother and lived in a dilapidated Shinto shrine under the protection of a kind priest. To stay hidden from the governor, forged family registers were created, allowing them to live under false identities. Her mother worked in underground sex businesses to raise Fumino but eventually fell ill and died, leaving Fumino alone in the ruined shrine after the priest also passed away. Before dying, Fumino's mother left her with the important wish to someday meet a person she could truly trust. To survive and avoid capture, Fumino entered school under the male pseudonym Fukiko.

Fumino possesses two notable abilities. The first is a supernatural ocular power sometimes referred to as the Toyotama Eye, which allows her to see whether others are speaking the truth or a lie and can help her find any person or object she seeks. The second is her exceptional skill as a sniper. She acts as a long-range support sniper for the resistance group NLNS, where her codename is ATM-05. Her extraordinary eyesight is said to contribute directly to her marksmanship. However, the use of her psychic powers is not without consequence, as they can sometimes lead to unhappiness or physical strain, such as the gradual loss of vision in one eye following traumatic events.

Fumino is described within the story as the key to crushing the Pervert Ordinance, as she serves as living proof of Governor Nira's hypocrisy and the ordinance's human cost. Her primary motivation stems from her mother's dying wish to find someone worthy of her trust. This leads her to initially fight alone against the corrupt forces on the island before eventually joining and developing a deep bond of loyalty and love with Junnosuke Tachibana and the other members of NLNS, including Misaki Hotori and Hinami Watarai. Her relationship with her biological father, the governor, is complicated, as he is portrayed as a weak and problematic figure who nevertheless may hold genuine affection for her. Her grandfather, the Sakimori Old Man, is a darker figure who seeks to use her as a political tool to destabilize the island's government.

Throughout the different routes of the story, Fumino undergoes significant development. In routes where she is not the primary focus, she often meets tragic ends, such as losing her eyesight or being captured. In her own route, she overcomes her tendency to bear everything alone by learning to trust Junnosuke and accept his help. She ultimately becomes a revolutionary figure known as Dosuke Jeanne d'Arc, whose public testimony and emotional broadcasts help reform the oppressive laws of the island. In the epilogue, she loses her supernatural ocular powers but finds a happy and fulfilling life, becoming a popular teacher of traditional arts and crafts under the affectionate name Professor Docejan, marrying Junnosuke, and founding a family.
