Description
Masaki Sonoue is the main protagonist of Mayonaka Punch. She is a video content creator who dedicates her life to video production, taking charge of planning, filming, and editing. Her full name is Masaki Sonoue, and she previously operated under the name Masakichi as a member of the popular NewTuber group Harikiri Sisters. Her career with that group ended abruptly when she was kicked out after a physical altercation with one of her collaborators during a livestream. This incident severely damaged her reputation, leaving her with few opportunities to rebuild a solo following and haunted by hateful online comments.

Personality-wise, Masaki is strong-willed, short-tempered, and impulsive. Her strong-willed nature is both a strength and a flaw, driving her relentless pursuit of success while also leading to confrontations. She is selfish, fame-hungry, and quick to anger, but these traits are rooted in a deep insecurity tied to her sense of self-worth, which is heavily influenced by public perception and metrics. She craves validation through subscriber counts and viewer reactions, often experiencing dramatic emotional swings based on feedback. Despite her abrasive exterior, she is also capable of deep commitment to her projects.

Her primary motivation is to rebuild her online reputation and achieve one million subscribers on NewTube, a goal she becomes desperate to reach. After hitting rock bottom, she meets the vampire Live, who has just awakened from a twenty-year sleep and becomes obsessed with Masaki’s blood. Masaki strikes a deal: in exchange for Live’s help in going viral and reaching one million subscribers, Live may feed on Masaki’s blood. This bargain sets the story in motion.

In the narrative, Masaki serves as the human bridge between the vampire world and the world of modern social media. She takes on the role of director, editor, and strategic mind for the newly formed channel Mayonaka Punch, which features Live and other vampires as talent. She exploits their supernatural abilities for attention-grabbing stunts while maintaining a cover story that everything is special effects. Her role is that of a producer who pushes content creation relentlessly, sometimes to the point of burnout, as seen when she churns out multiple videos per day while refusing sleep or help.

Key relationships define her journey. Her bond with Live is volatile and symbiotic: Masaki relies on Live’s powers for content, while Live is fixated on Masaki’s blood. Initially transactional, their partnership gradually deepens into a genuine friendship after Live reminds Masaki of why she started making videos. Another important relationship is with Ichiko, her former partner in the Harikiri Sisters who remained in the spotlight after Masaki’s cancellation. Ichiko serves as both a rival and a narrative foil representing the mainstream success Masaki lost. Among the other vampires, Masaki works with Fuu, the mature and level-headed vampire; Tokage, a lazy but tech-savvy gamer; and Yuki, a shy and soft-spoken young vampire. Their relationships start as purely professional, often strained by Masaki’s demanding nature, but evolve into a found family over time. The vampire elder known as Mother initially views Masaki’s project with skepticism, threatening to shut it down.

Masaki undergoes significant development. She begins by seeing the vampires as mere tools for views but gradually learns to value them as friends and collaborators. Her journey is one of redemption, moving from a desperate, self-destructive pursuit of fame to finding genuine connection. After experiencing burnout and pushing the vampires away, she recognizes her mistakes and reconsiders her priorities. By the end, she transitions from viewing her co-creators as assets to considering them a legitimate found family.

Her notable abilities lie in video production. She possesses strong skills in planning, filming, editing, and content strategy. She can rapidly identify trends, leverage gimmicks, and adapt the vampires’ abilities into compelling online content. She is capable of running a channel single-handedly during high-pressure periods, though this often leads to physical and mental exhaustion. She also demonstrates resourcefulness in managing the vampires’ powers while keeping their true nature secret from the public. Her strength of will, while occasionally a flaw, allows her to persevere through setbacks and rebuild from near-total ruin.
