Cody "Iori" Hida hails from a family scarred by tragedy, his father Hiroki, a police officer, killed in the line of duty in London during 1999. This loss profoundly shaped his upbringing under his mother Fumiko and grandfather Chikara, a kendo master who instilled strict principles of honor, justice, and maturity. From a young age, Cody displayed unusual seriousness and wisdom, adhering to a rigid moral code emphasizing honesty and responsibility. He resides in Odaiba, befriending the older neighbor Miyako Inoue and later meeting Takeru Takaishi.
Chosen as a DigiDestined in 2002, he partners with Armadillomon and wields the Digi-Eggs of Knowledge and Reliability. His starkly black-and-white worldview sparks conflict when reality challenges his ideals. During an offshore oil platform crisis, he lies to retrieve Joe Kido for help, afterward believing himself unworthy of the Digi-Egg of Reliability. Joe reassures him that this necessary act for his friends' safety doesn't negate his reliability, enabling Armadillomon's armor-digivolution into Submarimon. This marks the start of his understanding of moral nuance.
His struggle with forgiveness surfaces when Ken Ichijouji joins the team; Cody initially rejects Ken due to his past as the Digimon Kaiser, which endangered the group. Gradually, he learns to work alongside Ken for the team's sake, fully accepting him by attending his Christmas party. In battle against MarineDevimon, he confronts the harsh reality of lethal force after Shakkoumon destroys the Digimon to protect a hospital, leaving him shaken but accepting its necessity.
Emotional ties to his father's memory deepen upon learning Hiroki knew of the Digital World and that Yukio Oikawa, the primary antagonist later possessed by MaloMyotismon, was Hiroki's best friend. During the final battle against MaloMyotismon, Cody experiences an illusion of reuniting with his father, broken by Armadillomon. He then harnesses the dream dimension's power to summon multiple Digimon forms simultaneously against the foe. After MaloMyotismon's defeat, he attempts to rescue Oikawa, who transforms into digital butterflies to restore the Digital World, leaving Cody to mourn his loss.
In later years, Cody pursues academic and personal growth. By 2010, as a high school sophomore, he studies rigorously for law school while maintaining kendo as a club activity. He remains committed to justice and moral integrity, aiding investigations during conflicts like the Eosmon incident, collaborating with other DigiDestined to uncover false identities and digital threats. His appearance reflects maturity through increased height and a more adult demeanor, yet his core traits of determination and principle endure.
As an adult by 2028, Cody becomes a high-class defense attorney, married with a daughter partnered with an Upamon. This career embodies his lifelong dedication to justice and reliability, fulfilling the ideals instilled by his grandfather and refined through his experiences as a DigiDestined.
