Description
Lay Glanzudulii is a pureblood demon student at the Demon King Academy and a member of the Generation of Chaos, commonly known as the Demon Sword Saint or the Saint of Magic Sword Forging. He is a young man with shoulder-length white hair and pale blue eyes, typically dressed in a long-coat version of the academy’s black-and-red uniform reserved for pureblood students. Despite his aristocratic status, he lacks the arrogance common among other royal demons; he is mellow, friendly, easygoing, and treats everyone equally, including hybrid demons and those of lower standing. Lay has no natural talent for magic, but his swordsmanship skill is recognized as prodigious of the highest order. He can wield any blade, even holy swords that ordinary demons cannot touch, and his mastery of sword techniques earned him his title.

Lay was orphaned at age five, when his family expected him to die, but he was taken in and raised by Sheila Glanzudulii, a half‑spirit half‑demon woman. This adoption gave him his surname. Later, he transfers into Class 1-2 at the Demon King Academy, where he becomes a close friend of Anos Voldigoad, Sasha Necron, and Misha Necron. He also develops a romantic relationship with Misa Ilioroagu.

A central aspect of Lay’s background is that he is the reincarnation of the Hero Kanon. Two thousand years ago, Kanon and the original Demon King Anos Voldigoad made a pact to end the war between humans and demons. Kanon assumed the false identity of the Demon King Avos Dilhevia and intended to be killed by humanity, allowing them to believe their enemy was destroyed and thereby extinguishing hatred toward demons. Lay carries the memories and purpose of that plan: he originally believed he was meant to die as the fake Demon King. This motivation drives much of his early actions in the story, as he struggles with his identity and destiny.

In the narrative of both seasons, Lay initially appears as a mysterious and exceptionally skilled swordsman who claims to prefer following rather than leading. His true identity as the fake Demon King Avos Dilhevia is later revealed. Throughout season two, his role deepens as he confronts his past, his relationship with Anos, and the complicated legacy of Kanon. His development involves moving from a resigned acceptance of his sacrificial fate to finding a new sense of purpose and desire to live, thanks in large part to the bonds he forms with Anos and his friends.

Key relationships anchor his growth. With Anos Voldigoad, Lay shares a bond that transcends reincarnation; Anos recognizes him as both an old friend and an equal, and their connection is marked by mutual respect and trust. With his adoptive mother Sheila, Lay feels a deep gratitude that grounds his personal history. With Misa Ilioroagu, he experiences a genuine romantic attachment that offers him hope beyond his former mission. He also maintains a complicated dynamic with the royalist factions and the Unitarians, disagreeing with the pureblood doctrine but remaining largely uninterested in either political side.

Notable abilities center on his unparalleled swordsmanship. Lay can intuitively wield any sword, instantly mastering its techniques, and he can even handle holy swords that are anathema to demons. He is called the Demon Sword Saint because his skill is considered legendary, and he can forge magical swords through his understanding of their nature. While he has almost no aptitude for conventional magic, his physical prowess and blade work make him one of the most dangerous fighters in the academy, second only to Anos. As the series progresses, he also begins to access and integrate the powers and memories of Kanon, enhancing his combat capabilities and expanding his understanding of the world.
