Description
Arcana, the Goddess of Selection, is a central figure introduced in the second season of The Misfit of Demon King Academy II. She is a divine being responsible for selecting participants for the Judgment Selection, a divine trial of significant importance. Physically, Arcana appears as a beautiful young girl with long, silky white hair and striking golden eyes, and she typically carries a calm, expressionless demeanor.

Her background is deeply tragic and complex, well before her appearance as a deity. Originally, she was an orphan girl born in the underground country of Agatha, who possessed a special dragon nucleus within her. This unique root made her a constant target for dragons, endangering the city and leading to her exile. Wandering and starving, she faced a life of suffering. After a series of betrayals and manipulations by various factions, including the Church of Jiordal, she was sacrificed to the Dragon King and became a Dragon Child. Later, chosen as a representative for the Selection Trial by the goddess Militia, she felt betrayed upon learning Militia intended to destroy the trial. This led her down a dark path where she was manipulated into becoming a divine proxy, an acting god, under the name Genedonov, the Goddess of Lies and Betrayal or the Goddess of Absurdity. In this form, she waged war on the gods before being killed and ultimately reborn.

Upon her rebirth, she lost all memories of her past identity as Genedonov, including her true divine name. In this state of amnesia, she became the composed Selection God known as Arcana. However, her loss of memory had a unique side effect; she gained a heart and emotions, something that true gods, who are merely order and law, are not supposed to possess. Because she forgot her divine nature, she retained a sense of kindness and a genuine desire to save people, unlike many of her emotionless divine kin.

Arcana’s personality is marked by a contrast between her stoic exterior and her inner emotional turmoil. She usually maintains a cool head and an expressionless face in her decision-making and planning. Yet this facade hides a being who is deeply motivated by a desire for salvation and kindness, a goal born from remembering only that she wanted to be kind. She is not a traditional god who disregards mortals; her experiences have given her a profound, albeit tragic, understanding of mortal suffering. A pivotal event in her recent past involved a grieving father whose daughter was killed in the Selection Trial. In her attempt to quell his grief, she created a fake daughter with all the real one's memories. When the father learned the truth, he killed himself, teaching Arcana the painful lesson that the gods are not omnipotent and that salvation for one can mean damnation for another.

In the story, Arcana initially serves as the Selection God for Ahide Alovo Agatze, one of the main antagonists of the arc. She appears before Anos Voldigoad multiple times during the Judgment Selection, acting as an agent of the goddess Militia. Despite a fabricated backstory as Anos's sister from two thousand years ago—a story Anos sees in dreams but cannot remember after his rebirth—Arcana has no genuine recollection of him. Her role evolves significantly after Ahide is defeated by Anos. Unable to return to her original place, she chooses to serve as Anos's Selection God instead and temporarily resides in his household for the duration of the trial. This shift aligns her with the protagonist, though her motivations remain rooted in her search for someone who can disprove her belief that no almighty being capable of saving everyone exists.

Key relationships define her journey. Her bond with Anos Voldigoad is central, moving from adversary to ally, with a mysterious past connection that neither fully understands. Her relationship with Ahide is one of a deity to her chosen, though she ultimately abandons him for Anos. Perhaps most important is her relationship with Militia, the Goddess of Creation, who chose her for the trial but whom Arcana felt betrayed by, leading to her original downfall.

Throughout the series, Arcana exhibits a range of notable abilities befitting a high-tier deity. She possesses immense magic power, with a near-bottomless pool of magical energy. As a god, she is a conceptual existence, maintaining and embodying the very order and laws of the world, making her an abstract being rather than a simple physical entity. Her unique authority is the Six Flowers of Disobedience <Levihelluota>, a divine power that allows her to negate and neutralize the authorities of other gods. For a time, she also temporarily possessed the ability to use Militia's authority, the Moon of Creation <Artieltonoa>, which holds power over creation and rebirth. Her development sees her transitioning from a manipulated, amnesiac deity with a mysterious past to a more independent figure who chooses her own path by siding with Anos, all while wrestling with the emotions and desires her lost memories have inadvertently granted her.
