Description
Chihiro Kobayashi is a secondary character who appears as a close friend of Anna Yamada. She is a student at Daijuni Middle School, beginning in class 2-3 and later advancing to class 3-1 alongside most of the main cast. Her background includes attending the same elementary school as Kyotaro Ichikawa, Moeko Sekine, and other peers, though she first met Anna Yamada after entering middle school. She comes from a family that includes her parents, a grandmother, and two younger brothers.
In terms of appearance, Chihiro is notably shorter than the other girls in her friend group, giving her a more childish and youthful look. She has short, brown hair styled in a simple cut and brown eyes. She stands at 141 centimeters tall.
Chihiro possesses a brash and straightforward personality that contrasts with her small stature. She is known for being energetic, honest to a fault, and sometimes oblivious to more mature social situations. She often acts as a straight man to Anna Yamada’s comedic antics, calling out her friend for disappearing from responsibilities or for clumsy behavior. While she is generally socially perceptive, she has a notable blind spot when it comes to romance, remaining uniquely unaware of the mutual feelings developing between her best friend Anna and their classmate Kyotaro Ichikawa. This naivety extends to other situations, such as failing to recognize when someone uses her to get closer to Anna. She is also afraid of supernatural horror themes.
Chihiro’s primary role in the story is as a supporting figure and a stabilizing presence within her friend group. She acts as a confidante and protector for Anna, to such an extent that the protagonist, Kyotaro Ichikawa, privately nicknames her “Yamada’s Boyfriend”. She and Anna have a dynamic physical comedy routine where the considerably larger Anna uses Chihiro as a form of transport or as furniture, an act that the other students compare to performing skinship. Despite their bickering, where Chihiro often insults Anna by calling her a “giant,” their friendship is built on a strong and loyal foundation. Her relationship with Kyotaro Ichikawa evolves over time. Initially, she holds a double standard towards him, finding his belongings gross while admiring the same item on Anna, but she later shows concern for him after he is injured.
Throughout the series, Chihiro shows little development in her romantic awareness, maintaining her role as a comic foil who is oblivious to the emotional tension between Anna and Kyotaro. However, her supportive nature as Anna’s manager and protector remains a consistent and notable trait.
Chihiro has several notable abilities and personal interests. She is an active and talented member of the school’s basketball club, having been the top scorer in her district competitions during elementary school despite her height disadvantage. She is a movie buff with favorite films including The Goonies, Léon: The Professional, and Kids Return, which leads Anna to frequently ask her for recommendations. Her other favorites include tuna as a food, the color orange, and the celebrity Kotori Yoshio. She has unspecified food allergies that prevent her from eating certain things, including snacks. In elementary school, she owned three pet goldfish named Ron, Pon, and Kan. Her hobbies include chasing bugs like cicadas in the park with her younger brothers.
