Description
Muga Iori is the personal butler of Momiji Ooka, a wealthy young woman from a prominent family in Kyoto. He serves as her chauffeur, bodyguard, and trusted advisor, accompanying her on almost all of her appearances. Iori is a tall, slender man with sharp features, long curly hair that he usually keeps hidden under a hat, and thick-rimmed glasses that he also removes on occasion. His calm and composed demeanor often makes him seem unremarkable at first glance, but his presence is difficult for even the sharpest observers to detect until he chooses to reveal it.

Iori’s background is unusual for a butler. He is a former officer of the Public Security Bureau, having graduated from the police academy in the same year as Kazami and served in the same division as Furuya. During an undercover mission under the codename Sakakibara, he was injured while protecting Momiji’s grandfather, a former prime minister. Momiji, then a middle school student, treated him with unexpected kindness while he was hiding in a shed. Moved by her warmth, Iori decided to leave the police force and dedicate himself to serving her as her butler. This decision came three years before the events of the story.

Iori is fiercely loyal to Momiji and deeply committed to supporting her wishes, particularly her romantic interest in Heiji Hattori, whom she calls her future husband. He is confident that Kazuha Toyama will not be an obstacle for Momiji and has openly approved of Heiji as a suitable partner after observing him in person. Momiji relies on Iori for second opinions and often sends him ahead to gather information or assess situations. Despite his loyalty, Iori sometimes makes small, independent decisions that subtly influence events, such as choosing not to inform Momiji of Heiji’s location when he spots him, which some interpret as an attempt to prevent a premature meeting.

Iori is highly analytical and careful in his planning, making him a trustworthy and effective butler. He is an accomplished martial artist, likely skilled in Muay Thai, as demonstrated when he uses a flying knee to incapacitate a threat. He also possesses a remarkable ability to move without being noticed, surprising even seasoned detectives like Conan Edogawa and Heiji Hattori with his stealth. In addition to his physical abilities, Iori has extensive knowledge of European history and is quick to improvise believable answers under pressure, as shown during his first encounter with Conan and Heiji at Café Poirot, where he introduced himself under the alias Shinichi Wada.

In the film The Million-dollar Pentagram, Iori accompanies Momiji to Hokkaido, where Heiji is participating in a kendo tournament. Aware of Heiji’s plan to confess his feelings to Kazuha, Momiji brings Iori along to help thwart the confession. Iori remarks that Hokkaido has a beautiful confession spot, which causes Momiji to suspect she knows what Heiji intends. During the climactic chase, Iori is asked by Momiji to help Conan by dropping flashbangs onto the cars of pursuing criminals from the Ooka family’s private helicopter. He does so, but accidentally drops another flashbang at the moment Heiji is about to confess to Kazuha, resulting in his words being drowned out by the explosion. The incident appears to be an accident, but it effectively prevents the confession from being heard.

Throughout the series, Iori’s character develops from a mysterious, shadowy figure into a more fully realized individual with a clear past and a genuine emotional bond with Momiji. His decision to become her butler after her kindness reveals a softer, more human side beneath his professional exterior. He is shown to be protective, not only of Momiji but also of those she cares about, and he is willing to take risks or suffer injuries to ensure her safety. His past as a Public Security officer also ties him to the larger network of law enforcement and intelligence characters within the series, though he no longer operates in that capacity. Iori remains a calm, capable, and quietly influential presence in Momiji’s life, dedicated to her happiness even when his methods are subtle or indirect.
