Description
Aoko Nakamori is a central character in the Magic Kaito series and a recurring figure in Detective Conan, where she is best known as the childhood friend and love interest of Kaito Kuroba, who leads a double life as the phantom thief Kaitou Kid. Aoko is a sixteen- to seventeen-year-old second-year student at Ekoda High School, attending class 2-B alongside Kaito, their friend Keiko, the witch Akako Koizumi, and the detective Saguru Hakuba. Her father is Ginzo Nakamori, the dedicated inspector from the Tokyo Metropolitan Police's Second Division who is famously obsessed with capturing Kaitou Kid.
Aoko possesses a highly temperamental personality, capable of being sweet and gentle in one moment before becoming boisterous and fiery the next. Much like her father, she is impulsive, easily riled up, and prone to shouting, with Kaito and the phantom thief he secretly is often serving as the triggers for her loud and occasionally violent outbursts. Kaito’s constant teasing, which includes the infamous prank of flipping up her skirt, is typically met with immediate retaliation, often in the form of a mop or whatever object is within reach. Despite this combative dynamic, Aoko has a mischievous side of her own and is not above using Kaito’s well-known weakness for fish to get revenge for his harassment.
Aoko has a tendency to refer to herself in the third person, a speech pattern considered cute and childlike in Japanese, and her fashion sense when not in her school uniform tends to be similarly youthful, favoring skirts and cardigans. Beneath her spirited exterior, she displays a high level of intelligence, notably demonstrated when she and Kaito effortlessly solve a complex math problem on the blackboard while continuing their antics in the classroom. However, she also exhibits signs of low self-esteem, as seen when she tearfully begged Kaito to go on a date with her to prove he was not Kaitou Kid, even after he called her ugly.
Aoko’s primary motivation is deeply personal. She harbors a strong dislike for Kaitou Kid, not for his thefts, but because she believes he makes a mockery of her father’s earnest efforts to capture him. She blames the phantom thief for stealing her father away from their family, as she wishes Ginzo would spend more time at home instead of obsessively chasing Kid. This central conflict is laced with dramatic irony, as Aoko is completely unaware that her despised foe, Kaitou Kid, is actually her best friend Kaito in disguise. She has occasionally suspected Kaito of being Kid, and on one notable occasion, she asked him out on the day of a scheduled heist and handcuffed him to her at a movie theater to prove his innocence; Kaito managed to escape and fool her with a dummy, ultimately steering her suspicions away.
Aoko’s most significant relationship is with Kaito Kuroba. The two have been best friends since they were small children, having first met at a clock tower, and their dynamic is often compared to that of Shinichi Kudo and Ran Mouri, though with a much sillier and more exaggerated tone. Despite their constant bickering, Kaito is shown to be quite protective of Aoko and appears genuinely displeased at the idea of her going on a date with someone like Saguru Hakuba. For her part, Aoko seems to have developed romantic feelings for Kaito, though neither of them has openly admitted it. Her relationship with her father is defined by his work; she frequently attends Kaitou Kid heists, much like Ran Mouri accompanies her own father to crime scenes, and her wish for a more present parent fuels her animosity toward the elusive thief. In terms of abilities, while Aoko has no superhuman powers, she is notably skilled with mathematics and displays a unique proficiency for weaponizing everyday cleaning supplies, particularly mops, against Kaito when he provokes her.
