Description
Ichigo Hitofuri is a tachi, a type of long sword, who has been brought to life as a Touken Danshi or sword warrior. His origins are distinct, as he is the only tachi ever forged by the renowned swordsmith Awataguchi Yoshimitsu, a master primarily known for creating shorter tantou daggers. This unique status is reflected in his name, which carries the meaning of a blade crafted in a single lifetime, signifying its one-of-a-kind nature. His original form was significantly altered when he came into the possession of the historical figure Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who ordered the blade to be shortened to better suit his own stature. A pivotal and tragic event in his history is the Summer Siege of Osaka Castle in 1615, where he was damaged in a fire. He was later re-tempered, but this incident resulted in the loss of many of his memories and left a deep, lasting trauma.
In terms of personality, Ichigo Hitofuri is most often seen with a kind, calm, and gentle smile. He carries himself with a natural elegance and a dignified air that is present in both his daily interactions and his conduct during battles. Central to his character is his role as the eldest brother figure to the many Toushirou swords, who are primarily tantou from the same Awataguchi school. Because he is the tallest and the only tachi among them, he is looked up to as the older sibling and is affectionately called Ichi-nii by his younger brothers. He is attentive and caring, often worrying about the well-being of his brothers like Namazuo and Yagen Toushirou, and he can be strict when necessary to ensure tasks are completed properly. However, this calm exterior sometimes gives way to a more sorrowful expression, hinting at the inner weight he carries. He tends to keep certain feelings to himself, such as deep-seated worries about losing his identity after being reforged and a quiet concern about his place among many other swords.
His primary motivation stems from his role as the eldest brother. He is driven by a profound sense of responsibility to protect and support his younger siblings, as well as his fellow swords. This protective instinct extends beyond his immediate family, as he also worries about how he can best support the Oda swords within his group. His gentle familial care is not exclusive to his brothers; he also shows a nurturing side to other shorter swords who have childlike appearances. He is valued as a strategic thinker and a source of stability, making him an essential pillar of his team.
Key relationships are primarily defined by his bond with the Awataguchi school. He shares a particularly close connection with his brothers Namazuo Toushirou and Yagen Toushirou, the latter of whom he shares special dialogue with, indicating a strong partnership. The trauma of being burned in Osaka Castle is not a solitary one, as his brother Namazuo was also damaged in the same incident, creating a shared and painful history between them. While not a familial bond, he also has specific interactions with Heshikiri Hasebe.
The character of Ichigo Hitofuri demonstrates a notable internal development. While he consistently presents a composed and helpful exterior, he is haunted by the memories he lost and the fragility he now possesses from being burned and re-tempered. This creates a contrast between his outward role as the dependable eldest brother and the inner vulnerability of a blade who fears losing his sense of self. His development involves navigating this trauma and finding a way to fulfill his duties and support those who rely on him despite his own internal pain.
Regarding notable abilities, as a tachi, his fighting style is characterized by a dignified elegance and he is capable in battle. His blade has a short range compared to other tachi, which is a reflection of its historical shortening. The specific details of his combat skills are not extensively detailed, but his primary strengths are consistently described as his strategic mind, his ability to inspire others, and the unwavering support he provides as a leader and brother.
