Description
Imm is the central protagonist of the story, an immortal being created by a divine entity known as the Beholder and sent to Earth with the primary purpose of preserving the world. Initially, Imm begins its existence as a simple, inert object, a small sphere or stone, but it possesses the unique ability to transform upon receiving external stimuli. Its first significant transformation occurs when it takes the form of a dying white wolf, followed by the shape of the wolf’s owner, a nameless boy living in an abandoned arctic settlement.

Imm’s personality is not innate but is developed over a long and often painful journey. It begins as a completely blank slate, devoid of emotions, personal identity, and a sense of self, operating primarily on instinct. Through countless interactions with a wide variety of people over centuries, Imm gradually learns complex human concepts such as pain, empathy, friendship, love, and loneliness. This development is often tragic, as Imm learns as much from loss as from companionship. The character is defined by a deep, long-lasting loneliness that persists despite its many relationships, as it must watch its mortal friends age and die while it remains unchanged. This experience leads Imm to a profound sense of survivor’s guilt and a recurring existential crisis regarding the value of a life that never ends.

The core motivation driving Imm evolves throughout the narrative. In the beginning, it passively absorbs knowledge as instructed by its creator. However, after forming deep bonds, its primary motivation shifts to a powerful desire to protect humanity from the Nokkers, a parasitic enemy force that threatens to destroy all life and impede its mission. Beyond this external conflict, a more personal motivation emerges from its travels with the eccentric Prince Bonchien. Imm seeks to understand the meaning of its own existence and what it truly means to be human, often questioning its purpose beyond being a tool for preservation. In much later stages of the story, which jumps thousands of years into the future, Imm embraces the role of the guardian of the world, taking the place of the now-mortal Beholder.

Imm’s role in the story is that of a living archive and a warrior. Its primary function is to collect and store information about the world, be it the shape of a plant, the form of an animal, or the body of a person. This ability to take on the forms of the deceased directly shapes its role as a protector, as it uses the unique skills of those it has lost to fight its enemies. By the third major arc of the series, set in a distant future, Imm has become the world’s guardian. However, the narrative perspective shifts to a new character, a mechanical doll seeking humanity, placing Imm in a more distant, god-like position.

Key relationships are the foundation of Imm’s character development. The first crucial relationship is with March, a young girl who is chosen as a human sacrifice. She is the one who gives the immortal being the name "Imm," and her death is a primary catalyst for Imm’s first real feelings of sorrow and empathy. Another pivotal bond is with Gugu, a boy disfigured in an accident who wears a mask. Gugu becomes like a brother to Imm, teaching him about family, work, and the pain of unrequited love. His eventual death is a source of immense grief for Imm. Parona, a protective girl from March’s village, also plays a significant role as a protector and skilled combatant, and her form is one that Imm frequently uses. Later, the relationship with the eccentric Prince Bonchien (Bonshen) is transformative. Bonchien, who has the ability to see the dead, becomes a true companion and strategist, helping Imm intellectually and emotionally by encouraging him to see himself as a person who deserves friends and love. The Beholder, or the Man in Black, is Imm’s distant and mysterious creator, acting as a guide but also a reminder of his duty.

The character’s development is the central theme of the narrative. Imm transforms from an emotionless rock to a being with a rich inner world full of sorrow, joy, and determination. This growth is not linear; it experiences repeated cycles of forming attachments, suffering loss, and isolating itself to avoid further pain. A significant part of its development involves learning to overcome this trauma and choosing to continue forming connections despite the inevitable heartbreak. This journey towards understanding humanity is marked by learning to speak, write, and grasp the nuances of social interaction.

Imm possesses several notable abilities centered around its nature as a shapeshifter. Its primary ability is Voluntary Shapeshifting, which allows it to transform into any form it has learned from a person, animal, or object that has died. When it takes a human or animal form, it also gains their physical skills and abilities, such as a bear’s powerful strike or a warrior’s combat skills. It can also perform Spontaneous Weapon Creation, manifesting objects it has touched before, such as swords or arrows, from its own body. A crucial aspect of its power is Resurrective Immortality; Imm can be killed, but it will eventually resurrect and regenerate its wounds. However, it can still feel pain during this process, which is often agonizing. Despite this power, it is incapable of truly bringing the dead back to life, as it can only create a lifeless husk of the person
