Description
Karula is a character from the world of darkness, also known as the Dark Dominion, and is the childhood friend of another character named Rupa. Her name has seen variations in different translations; while some older English versions refer to her as Carla, the 2022 VIZ Media English translation of the manga uses the name Karula, which is closer to the original Japanese romaji spelling.
From a young age, Karula has been deeply and passionately in love with Rupa. Their relationship was once friendly, but everything changed when Rupa received news of his arranged engagement to Lum, the Oni princess. When Rupa innocently showed Karula a picture of his intended bride-to-be, Karula was overcome with jealousy. This event marked a turning point, transforming her from a simple childhood friend into a relentless and violent pursuer. For over a decade, she has pursued Rupa, alternating between showering him with obsessive gifts, such as dolls and portraits of herself, and launching terrifying attacks on him. Ironically, her aggressive behavior is the primary reason Rupa distances himself from her, a rejection that only fuels her desperate drive to force him to love her.
Karula's personality is defined by her incredible passion and unrestrained nature. She throws herself wholeheartedly into whatever she desires, but this intensity is coupled with a violently aggressive and temperamental disposition. When she succumbs to her rage, she attacks wildly with whatever weapons are at hand, and she is frequently depicted carrying a large firearm. She is headstrong, stubborn, and reluctant to admit fault, often refusing to see that her own actions are what push Rupa away. Even when confronted with the truth that her attacks are the problem, she refuses to apologize for them. Her portrayal combines the traits of a passionate woman who is, in many ways, her own worst enemy.
Karula plays a pivotal role as an antagonist and eventual ally in a story arc where Rupa attempts to kidnap Lum and force her into marriage. Determined to stop the wedding, Karula travels to the spaceport but collides with another ship, an accident that leads to her encountering Ataru Moroboshi, Lum's unwilling fiancé on Earth. She takes Ataru hostage and uses him to infiltrate the wedding ceremony, but her infamous reputation for attacking Rupa leads to her being quickly recognized, forcing her to blast her way into the hall. Her intervention, combined with Ataru's rescue attempt, successfully thwarts the forced wedding.
After the failed wedding, Karula returns to Earth with Ataru and his friends. While trying to be helpful, she offers mushrooms from her world to add to a hotpot but neglects to mention that they grow explosively when exposed to heat and light. This results in a giant mushroom forest overrunning the town of Tomobiki. To fix the disaster she caused, Karula is forced to call Rupa, whose flying pigs can eat the mushrooms. This crisis leads to a final confrontation, where Rupa reveals his true feelings: he will only remove the mushrooms if Karula agrees to return to the world of darkness with him and become his bride.
Through this, Karula experiences significant development. Her obsessive, decade-long pursuit of Rupa finally comes to a resolution when he explicitly declares his love for her. Once the words register, her grievances melt away, and she happily throws herself into his embrace, finally achieving the relationship she always wanted. In terms of abilities, Karula is a resident of the world of darkness, and though specific powers are not detailed, she is highly skilled in using advanced alien weaponry, including a large firearm. She also possesses knowledge of the unique properties of her home world's flora, such as the heat-and-light-reactive giant mushrooms.
