Description
Heinkel Astrea is a middle-aged man with light skin and a muscular build, standing approximately 185 centimeters or six feet one inch tall. He possesses the characteristic red hair and sky-blue eyes of the Astrea family, though his unkempt short hair and untended stubble diminish his otherwise handsome features. His typical attire consists of a black shirt with tattered sleeves, brown pants, black knee-high boots, a tattered brown cape, and a brown leather cuirass with pauldrons.
Heinkel was not always the abrasive figure seen in the main story. In his youth, he was a much more earnest and kind-hearted individual who aspired to become the next Sword Saint, following in the footsteps of his mother, Theresia van Astrea. He worked diligently toward this goal, even becoming the Deputy Commander of the Royal Guard, and he married the woman he loved, Louanna. Their son, Reinhard, was born from this union.
The tragic turn in Heinkel's life began when Louanna fell into a mysterious, deep sleep that resembled a coma, an incurable condition that struck just two years after Reinhard's birth. Plagued by grief and guilt after lashing out at the physician who could not save his wife, Heinkel turned to alcohol and became a completely different person. He grew arrogant, brash, and slovenly, shirking his responsibilities as the head of House Astrea and neglecting the upbringing and wellbeing of his son. He is not ashamed to use his noble position to intimidate others and has been known to resort to underhanded tactics, such as kidnapping, to gain an advantage.
Heinkel’s role in the story is deeply tied to the fractured legacy of the Astrea family. His most infamous act was refusing a commission to lead a subjugation force against the White Whale, a legendary monster. Overcome with fear, he instead recommended his mother, Theresia, who had already retired, to take his place. Theresia agreed and went into battle, where she was killed. This event, coupled with his son Reinhard inadvertently inheriting the Sword Saint's blessing at the exact moment of her battle, became the catalyst for the family’s ruin. Heinkel's father, Wilhelm van Astrea, returned from a separate mission to find his wife dead and held both his son and grandson responsible, leading to a permanent estrangement between the three men.
Heinkel’s key relationships are almost universally strained. His bond with his son, Reinhard, is the most tragic. In the immediate aftermath of Theresia's death, Heinkel was the only one who stood by Reinhard, and the young boy idolized his father. However, Heinkel’s descent into alcoholism destroyed this intimacy. In the present, Heinkel uses his son’s power and title as the Sword Saint as a tool to safeguard his own position as Deputy Commander, showing little paternal love. He has even used a hostage to force Reinhard to act as his personal bodyguard. Despite this, moments have revealed that a sliver of concern for his son still exists beneath his bitter exterior. His relationship with his own father, Wilhelm, is one of mutual resentment, and he is estranged from him. Heinkel is also a nominal ally of Priscilla Barielle, having formed an agreement with her to gain access to the Dragon’s Blood, which he believes is the only cure for his sleeping wife.
Despite being a member of the legendary Astrea family, Heinkel’s abilities are considered modest by their impossible standards. He is, nevertheless, an expert swordsman whose craft has been honed over many years. His swordplay has been described as beautiful and elegant by observers like Aldebaran, and he is capable of fighting purely on instinct when needed. He can single-handedly defeat groups of highly trained enemies and even managed to deflect attacks from his mother, the former Sword Saint, for a short period. He also utilizes the Holy Sword Astrea, a one-handed sword passed down through generations of his family.
The character of Heinkel Astrea sees some development through the events of the story, primarily defined by his overwhelming regret. His primary motivation is to cure his wife Louanna, a goal that drives his alliance with Priscilla and many of his selfish actions. When the reanimated corpse of Theresia appears, Heinkel is thrown into a state of anguish, and he is present when his son is forced to destroy it. This traumatic event reignites his bitterness and leads him to vow to ruin Reinhard’s reputation, showcasing how his grief continues to poison his actions and relationships.
