Description
E-Soul is a major character from the anime To Be Hero X, a hero whose real name is Yang Cheng. He is the successor to a legendary heroic mantle originally held by another individual, and his story is one of tragedy, revenge, and the loss of self. As a child, Yang Cheng witnessed the brutal murder of his parents, Yang Tianxiang and Lu Xin, by criminals and was saved from the same fate by the original E-Soul. This event left him an orphan with no living relatives, forcing him to grow up in the city's welfare system. For a long period following this trauma, Yang Cheng's Trust Value, the measure of public belief that fuels a hero's power, remained at zero, reflecting his profound isolation and lack of self-worth.
In his youth, Yang Cheng was a hesitant and insecure individual who deeply admired the hero who saved him. He participated in a selection event hosted by the hero agency Mighty Glory, hoping for a chance to perform on the same stage as his idol. He also worked as a stage performer, cosplaying as E-Soul for children, driven by a pure desire to emulate the heroism he so admired. During his university years, he developed feelings for a classmate named Xia Qing, though he was too timid to ever confess. This personal insecurity and his low Trust Value led to him being ostracized and bullied. His path changed when he bravely chased after thugs who kidnapped a young fan named Xiao Youzi. Despite having no real power, his willingness to stand up for the child caused Xiao Youzi to believe in him as the true E-Soul. That single person's trust awakened a fraction of the electric powers associated with the hero's mantle, allowing him to defeat the kidnappers.
This act of heroism, which went viral on social media, gave Yang Cheng public trust and allowed him to begin making a name for himself as the new E-Soul, with the help of his supportive university friend, the tech mogul Shang Chao. However, this rise was manipulated from the beginning by his agent, Yan Mo, the head of Mighty Glory. A series of tragic events, including being framed for a crime and the murder of Shang Chao, pushed Yang Cheng down a darker path. Consumed by a desire for revenge and spurred on by Yan Mo, he threw himself into a brutal, life-or-death duel against the original E-Soul to claim the title for himself. Yang Cheng won the battle at great personal cost, losing one of his hands and, more significantly, his former ideals. After the fight, his Trust Value merged with that of his predecessor, causing his ranking to skyrocket to No. 9 and eventually to No. 3. The name E-Soul can be interpreted as both "electric soul" and "empty soul," a reflection of the cold, mechanical, and hollow person Yang Cheng became in his quest for power.
His key relationships are defined by loss and manipulation. He had a deep, unspoken affection for Xia Qing, which he ultimately sacrifices in his single-minded pursuit of revenge. His friendship with Shang Chao was one of genuine support, making Shang Chao's death a pivotal moment that cements Yang Cheng's tragic transformation. His young fan, Xiao Youzi, represents the pure trust that first ignited his heroism. His agent, Yan Mo, is the primary architect of his downfall, having orchestrated the events to turn Yang Cheng into a weapon to replace the old hero. In his role as a hero, E-Soul is known for his aggressive and powerful electric-based abilities. He wields a mechanical gauntlet that can transform into an electrified blade for his Electric Blade attack. His ultimate move, the High Voltage Fist or Electric Light Fist, channels a powerful electric current into the gauntlet to deliver explosive force. His speed is noted to be beyond that of ordinary people. He demonstrated his power in major events such as the battle against the original E-Soul and the chaotic Ruins Incident, where he incapacitated other heroes like Mo Sha and severely injured Xiao Qiang before the fight was stopped. Following the Ruins Incident, his ranking fell back to No. 9 and later dropped to No. 11, a decline that reflects the consequences of his actions and shifting public perception.
