Description
Hizuki Reynard Yamada is a central figure in the narrative, introduced as a high school girl attending the prestigious magic academy Lu Xel in Akihabara. She is the current head of the Reynard family, one of the three noble houses that once governed the city. Her appearance is distinct and memorable, characterized by long blonde hair, a tall and curvy figure, and mismatched eyes: her right eye is gold while her left eye is red. She is of mixed heritage, being a half-elf, which in the setting of Akihabara marks her as an outsider, with some characters cruelly referring to her as the Bat Girl because her parents came from the city's rival Electric and Magic districts.
Beneath a tough and often prickly exterior lies a classic tsundere personality. Hizuki frequently acts cold and says harsh things to keep others at a distance, but this behavior masks a deep-seated loneliness, insecurity, and a profound sense of not belonging anywhere. She is fiercely determined and hardworking, forced to be self-reliant after a family tragedy. Ten years prior to the main events, her parents were killed during a mysterious attack in which the family's treasured heirloom, a powerful artifact known as the Regalia or Royal Orb, was thought to be stolen. This event caused the Reynard family to fall from grace, leaving Hizuki orphaned, impoverished, and socially ostracized.
To survive and pay for her living expenses, Hizuki secretly works a part-time job at the Helheim maid café, a fact she conceals from her peers at the elite academy. Her struggles are compounded by a seemingly crippling weakness: despite her noble lineage, she possesses an extremely low capacity for magic and cannot perform spells like other students. This has made her a target for bullies like Albert Heygrams, who mock her as a failure who only gained admission to the school through family connections. The truth of her disability is a closely guarded secret. The Regalia was never actually stolen; it was surgically implanted into her right eye by her mother to protect her. This golden eye now serves as a vessel for the goddess Meldia, and almost all of Hizuki's magical power is passively drained to keep the goddess sealed away, leaving her with nothing for spellcasting.
Hizuki's role in the story becomes deeply entwined with that of the demon lord Veltol Velvet Velsvalt. When Veltol and his companions infiltrate her academy, he takes notice of her, calling her shining and stubbornly seeking her friendship despite her attempts to push him away, playfully nicknaming her Hijiki. Through her interactions with Veltol, Machina, and Takahashi, Hizuki begins to form genuine connections for the first time since her family's death. She finds herself cared for and defended, most notably when Veltol champions her in a duel against her tormentor. As the plot unfolds, she is forced to confront her destiny when antagonistic forces gather the scattered pieces of the Regalia in an attempt to forcibly awaken the goddess Meldia within her. She is ultimately rescued from this fate by Veltol and his friends.
Her character undergoes a significant transformation from a lonely, isolated outcast to an active agent of her own future. After the crisis is resolved and all the Regalia are collected, Hizuki is positioned as the legitimate ruler of Akihabara. However, haunted by painful memories and a desire to break free from the systems that scorned her, she delivers a public speech abolishing the throne. She insults the citizenry, declaring she will not rule, and instead decides to transfer to Shinjuku City First High School to start a new life. Deep within, she nurtures a burning desire for revenge against the mysterious villain who destroyed her family and a growing, heartfelt affection for Veltol, the one who saved her from a life of loneliness and danger.
