Description
Hanzo Urushihara, originally known as Lucifer, is a fallen angel who was once a high-ranking archangel in heaven. He abandoned his celestial position because he found it too boring, leading to his fall from grace and the transformation of his wings from white to black, symbolizing his corruption. Following this, he traveled to the demon realm where he eventually served as one of the four Demon Generals under the Devil King Sadao Maou, taking part in the invasion of the world of Ente Isla.
Urushihara is characterized by a profound laziness and apathy, preferring to spend his time surfing the internet and playing video games to an obsessive degree. After being defeated and moving into Maou and Ashiya's small apartment in Tokyo, this behavior intensified, and he became a classic hikikomori, rarely leaving the residence. He is cunning and manipulative, as shown when he tricks the others into retrieving his lost game console from a school under a false pretext. Despite his detachment, he possesses a sneaky and shrewd intelligence, demonstrated by his ability to hack electronic devices. He is often irritated when others refer to him as a NEET or hikikomori, although he admits to it himself. He also has several peculiar quirks, including being allergic to dust and cats and suffering from motion sickness in land vehicles.
His primary motivation initially was to return to heaven. After traveling to the human world, he allied with the rogue archbishop Olba Meyer to defeat both Maou and the Hero Emilia Justina, believing this would allow him to regain his angelic status. However, after being soundly defeated by Maou, his goals shifted dramatically. He accepted Maou’s offer to live in hiding with him and his fellow general Ashiya. In exchange for being provided with a laptop and internet connection, his nominal role is to use his technological skills to research magical energy sources to help the group return to Ente Isla. In practice, his motivation centers on maintaining his comfortable, isolated lifestyle, and he occasionally acts in self-interest to protect his circumstances, such as selling his own possessions to help pay off debts.
In the story, Hanzo Urushihara begins as a significant antagonist responsible for a series of attacks that drain people's negative emotions to restore his power. After his defeat, he becomes a member of the Devil's Castle household, adding to the financial and domestic strain on Maou and Ashiya. While he does little to help with chores or finances, his knowledge of the internet and hacking sometimes provides crucial information or assistance. For instance, he was the first among the demons to figure out how to harness negative human emotions as a power source on Earth. His presence serves as a comedic foil, with his extreme laziness clashing against Ashiya's devoted diligence and Maou's resigned tolerance.
His key relationships are primarily with his housemates and former enemies. With Sadao Maou, the former demon king, Urushihara has a unique dynamic. Despite his betrayal, Maou shows him a surprising degree of patience and friendliness, giving him a second chance and a place to live. Maou is often irritated by Urushihara’s wasteful spending on games but allows him significant freedom. With Shiro Ashiya, another former demon general, the relationship is one of constant nagging. Ashiya views Urushihara as a lazy and ungrateful nuisance who shows his master no respect, frequently scolding him for his poor habits. With Emi Yusa, the hero who once thought she had killed him, their interactions evolve from outright animosity to a humorous and bickering camaraderie. While underlying tensions remain, they are often forced to cooperate, leading to a dynamic of reluctant allies who constantly trade witty insults.
Throughout the series, Urushihara undergoes a subtle development from a bored, power-hungry instigator to a more settled, if still unmotivated, recluse who has found a strange sense of belonging. He evolves from actively plotting to kill Maou and Emi to being an unwilling participant in their conflicts, eventually protecting the mundane life he has grown accustomed to. Though he never truly sheds his apathetic and self-serving nature, rare moments of selflessness, such as sacrificing a valued possession for the group's benefit, hint at a growing, albeit latent, loyalty to his new, unconventional family.
As a fallen angel and former demon general, Urushihara possesses notable supernatural abilities, though they are severely limited on Earth. He can replenish his power by absorbing negative human emotions like fear, despair, and pain. His primary combat abilities include generating and manipulating destructive purple energy capable of demolishing large structures, creating explosive projectiles from his feathers, and flying using his black demonic wings. He has high endurance, having survived powerful magical attacks and a thrust from a holy sword. On Earth, consuming food infused with holy magic can temporarily restore his original white wings and holy powers. He has also demonstrated skill in hacking and is highly proficient with computers and technology.
