Description
Caspond Bessarez is a character from the Holy Kingdom of Roble, known primarily as the older brother of Queen Calca Bessarez. He is a prince of the realm who, due to a series of extraordinary circumstances, ultimately becomes its new king. His physical appearance is that of a tall, slender man who appears to be in his late twenties or early thirties. He has blue eyes and straight, long blond hair that reaches his shoulders, a feature he shares with his sister.
By nature, Caspond is described as a kind, gentle, and compassionate individual who genuinely cares for the people of his kingdom. Unlike many members of a royal family, he had no interest in bloody succession feuds. Recognizing that his younger sister Calca possessed even greater potential and capability than he did, he willingly stepped aside and ceded his claim to the throne without any regret. Instead of pursuing power, he focused on deepening his understanding of aristocratic society. Despite his contentment with his decision, he did harbor some private worries about whether his sister, with her kind and idealistic heart, could bear the heavy burdens of rule. His talents leaned more toward political maneuvering and subtle strategy; the author has stated that if Caspond had become the Holy King, he would have been much more willing to employ underhanded methods than Calca, making him in some ways better suited for the throne.
Caspond's role in the story is deeply layered and built on a significant deception. Before the main events of the demonic invasion led by Jaldabaoth, the real Prince Caspond was captured by the forces of Nazarick and killed instantly with death magic. His body was preserved for a future scheme. Consequently, the Caspond Bessarez who appears throughout the crisis is not the genuine prince but a doppelganger, a shapeshifter sent from the Great Tomb of Nazarick to act as a secret agent. Using its racial abilities to read how others perceive the prince, the impostor plays the role with flawless precision, deceiving even those who knew him well. The doppelganger orchestrates a staged "rescue" from a prison camp, which allows him to seamlessly take command of the Holy Kingdom's resistance and liberation army. In this leadership role, he organizes war councils, develops strategies, negotiates with the southern nobles, and manages the rescued population. He never participates directly in combat but proves himself a brilliant and effective leader, all while subtly guiding the kingdom's actions to benefit the Sorcerer Kingdom of Ainz Ooal Gown.
Key relationships define his position. His most significant bond is with his sister, Queen Calca Bessarez, whom he loves and supports and who, in turn, sees him as the only member of their family she can fully trust. Unlike most of the royal family, he is also notably not hated by the formidable high priestess Kelart Custodio. After the war and the death of Calca, the doppelganger Caspond ascends the throne as the new king of the Holy Kingdom. From this position, he continues to serve Nazarick's interests, governing the nation as a compliant vassal while maintaining the public face of a beloved prince who rose from tragedy to save his people. His development is unique, as the character seen evolving from a cautious but capable leader into a hardened king is actually a non-human agent learning to manage a kingdom as a form of training for a future role, all the while finding his duties to be strenuous and troublesome.
In terms of abilities and noteworthy traits, Caspond (the original prince) is believed to have possessed classes as a cleric, sage, and high-ranking noble, and as a result, he could likely use some divine magic, though he never does so in the story. However, his true strengths are intellectual and political. He is a master of strategy, manipulation, and governance. The doppelganger impersonating him also possesses the shapeshifter's inherent abilities but is noted to be weak in direct combat, unable to triumph against minions like a Shadow Demon or a Hanzo despite its nature. A distinct personal detail is his favorite hobby: reading, with a strong preference for history books. He is also known by the nickname the Gentle Prince, and his birthday is on the 27th day of the month of Waning Fire.
