Description
Hayato Kasukabe is the central character and owner of the Familia café. He is a nineteen-year-old young man with an indigo hair and blue eyes, standing 178 centimeters tall and weighing 61 kilograms. His journey to becoming the café's proprietor began with tragedy: he lost his parents in an accident when he was four years old and was subsequently raised by his paternal grandmother, Sachiko Kasukabe. A significant argument with his grandmother just before he entered high school caused a deep rift between them, leading him to leave for Tokyo on his own. This separation lasted for three years, during which he had no contact with her.

While living in Tokyo, Hayato focused entirely on his academic goals. He successfully passed the rigorous entrance exam for the University of Tokyo on his first attempt, a testament to his intellectual capabilities. His intelligence is not just academic; he is also described as being book smart and possessing a sharp, analytical mind. However, the news of his grandmother's death forced him to return to his hometown. His initial plan was purely pragmatic: to close down the café, demolish the old building, and turn the land into a parking lot. His intentions were complicated when he discovered that five young women were living in the house, each claiming to have been taken in by his grandmother and considering her family. After learning more about his grandmother's final wishes and her bond with these women, Hayato had a change of heart. He decided to take a leave of absence from the prestigious university to reopen and manage Café Terrace Familia, becoming its second master.

In terms of personality, Hayato often presents a tough, blunt, and straightforward exterior. He has a dour expression and is known to speak his mind without using honorifics, regardless of a person's age or status, as he believes in a form of equality. He can come across as proud and sarcastic. Despite this rough and sometimes narcissistic demeanor, he is fundamentally a good person with a strong sense of responsibility and a hidden caring nature. When those close to him are in trouble, he uses his quick thinking and excellent observational skills to find solutions and offer advice, even if he does so while grumbling. A major driving force for his actions is his deep-seated love and respect for his late grandmother. He is driven by a regret over their last argument and is fiercely protective of her legacy, refusing to tolerate anyone who speaks ill of her.

Hayato's primary motivation throughout the story is to restore his grandmother's café to its former glory. He takes his role as the manager very seriously, prioritizing the success and stability of Familia above all else. This sense of duty extends to the five women he now lives and works with: Ouka Makuzawa, Ami Tsuruga, Riho Tsukishima, Shiragiku Ono, and Akane Hououji. While he often clashes with them due to their inexperience and his rigid standards, he comes to view them as a kind of family and works to support them. His relationships with these women are central to the story. He is notably not dense about their romantic feelings for him, which is atypical for the genre. He is highly perceptive and can tell when someone is interested in him, but he consciously chooses to delay responding to their advances because his focus remains on managing the café.

Throughout the narrative, Hayato shows considerable development. He begins as a solitary, driven scholar, but reconnecting with his past and taking on the responsibility of the café forces him to become a leader and a team player. He learns to rely on others and to care for their well-being, slowly letting go of his initial plan to demolish the building and instead building a new future on the foundation his grandmother left behind. He is seen to be a fair but tough manager, willing to scold the girls when necessary, but also the first to step in and solve a complex problem. He also grows from someone who wanted to become rich to succeed on his own terms to someone who finds purpose in preserving a community and a home.

Hayato possesses several notable abilities. His academic prowess is matched by his strategic and financial acumen; he has been trading stocks since his student days and uses these skills to manage the café's finances and even outmaneuver business rivals. His most prominent ability is his keen insight and emotional intelligence. He can quickly discern when someone is troubled and understand the root of their problems. He is also remarkably observant of small details, such as being able to tell twin sisters apart at a single glance based on their habits. While highly intelligent and perceptive, he is also noted to be physically weak and has a particular distaste for sweets and smoking.
