Description
Gabimaru, known as Gabimaru the Hollow, is the central protagonist of the narrative. He is a young shinobi, standing approximately 150 centimeters tall, who was hailed as the most elite and ruthless assassin produced by the hidden ninja village of Iwagakure. His given name is not originally Gabimaru; that is a title passed down through generations, reserved for the deadliest ninja in the village's history, symbolizing an unkillable, terror-inspiring force. He was born under the name Tsuki.

Gabimaru's background is one of profound tragedy and indoctrination. As an infant, his parents were executed by the village chief for the crime of attempting to leave Iwagakure to raise him in a peaceful life. Orphaned, he was raised directly by the chief and subjected to a brutal training regimen from early childhood. This training was designed to strip away all emotion and individuality, forging him into a perfect, disposable tool for assassination. He was taught that sentimentality is a weakness, that his own life held no inherent value, and that his only purpose was to complete missions. This conditioning was extraordinarily effective, leading him to become a cold, detached killer who approached slaughter with the same dispassion as any other task, earning him the epithet Gabimaru the Hollow due to his perceived emotional emptiness.

His personality is defined by a stark contrast between his violent conditioning and his latent humanity. On the surface, Gabimaru is typically stoic, apathetic, and unflappable, maintaining an unnerving calm even in the face of imminent death, such as during his own repeated failed executions. He is exceedingly pragmatic, focusing solely on his objectives and viewing unnecessary combat as a waste of time. Despite this, he has a peculiar, almost petty side that emerges after the danger has passed, often complaining about trivial frustrations like being tied up with rough ropes or the poor quality of food, and he is easily irritated by comments regarding his short stature. His social skills are notably poor, a direct result of being raised solely as an assassin, leading to awkward or unintentionally frightening interactions with allies.

The single most transformative element in Gabimaru's life is his wife, Yui, the daughter of the Iwagakure chief. As a reward for his service, he was married to her, and this relationship fundamentally altered him. Yui's kindness and her belief that true strength comes from embracing one's emotions gradually broke through his lifelong indoctrination. For the first time, Gabimaru found a reason to live beyond a mission and began to dream of a normal, peaceful life. It is this love and devotion to Yui that becomes his primary motivation. When he attempts to leave the village with her, he is betrayed by the chief and handed over to the shogunate to be executed. He is not afraid to die, but he cannot bring himself to let go of his desire to see Yui again, a subconscious will to live that makes all forms of execution ineffective on his superhuman body.

His role in the story begins when Yamada Asaemon Sagiri, a executioner for the shogunate, discovers his impossible will to live. She offers him a pardon: travel to the legendary, deadly island of Shinsenkyo to retrieve the Elixir of Life for the shogun. Gabimaru accepts this suicidal mission solely for the chance to earn his freedom and reunite with Yui. On the island, he is initially a detached pragmatist, focused only on his goal. However, he is forced into a partnership with Sagiri, who is tasked with executing him should he show signs of treachery or monstrous transformation. This relationship, along with encounters with other criminals and executioners, slowly pushes him to change.

His key relationships are central to his development. His bond with Sagiri evolves from one of mutual surveillance and necessity to a deep, unspoken trust and care, with Gabimaru unconsciously moving to protect her when she is in danger. He forms a protective bond with Mei, a mysterious girl on the island, displaying genuine rage when she is threatened or treated as an object. His encounters with other criminals, such as the manipulative kunoichi Yuzuriha and the monstrously strong Rokurota, force him to cooperate and acknowledge a grudging respect for others' survival instincts.

Throughout the ordeal on Shinsenkyo, Gabimaru undergoes significant development. He experiences amnesia at one point, briefly reverting to his bloodthirsty, hollow assassin persona, which serves as a stark reminder of what he once was. Ultimately, the journey forces him to consciously reject the dehumanizing teachings of Iwagakure. He learns to accept his emotions not as a weakness but as the source of genuine strength—the drive to protect others and survive for a future with Yui. He changes from a man who believed his life was worthless to one who chooses to carry the weight of the lives he takes and fight for a future he wants to live.

In terms of notable abilities, Gabimaru is a master of all forms of combat, though he is most lethal unarmed. His body has been honed to superhuman levels through Iwagakure's grueling training, granting him immense strength, durability, and endurance, allowing him to go for days without sleep, harden his body to break blades, and even stop his own heart at will. He is a prodigy in ninjutsu, which is a practical application of Tao, the flow of life energy. His Tao has a natural affinity for fire, allowing him to perform a variety of devastating techniques. His signature move is Ninpō: Hibōshi, where he raises his body temperature to ignite the oils on his skin, turning himself into a living flame that can burn opponents or be channeled into projectiles and blasts of fire. He has numerous other techniques, such as Shinariba, where his belt is imbued with energy to act like a steel whip, and various explosive and projectile-based attacks. As he learns to consciously control his Tao on the island, his power grows exponentially, granting him superhuman speed, strength, and the ability to perceive and strike the weak points of god-like beings known as the Tensen. He also later acquires a form of regenerative immortality after being injected with a substance by an enemy, which causes vines to stitch his wounds back together, though this power comes with the risk of literally turning him into a tree.
