Description
Aza Chobe is a major supporting character in Hell's Paradise, known initially as a notorious criminal and later as a formidable combatant on the mysterious island. Before the events of the story, Chobe was the leader of a band of thieves in the Iyo province, earning him the title of Bandit King. Born a vassal to a lord, his family fell into ruin and poverty after his father was executed, forcing Chobe and his younger brother, Toma, to fend for themselves. Their harsh life led them to a group of thieves, where Chobe's strength and will allowed him to seize control and build a new, albeit criminal, life. His history is marked by extreme violence and numerous charges including murder, theft, and assault. A distinctive feature of his appearance is a large scar across his face and a missing eye, a wound he inflicted upon himself in the past to protect his brother. He is sentenced to death, but is given a chance at a pardon by joining the shogun's expedition to find the Elixir of Life.

Personality-wise, Chobe is a brutal, barbaric, and sadistic individual who prefers to solve problems with force rather than words. He revels in combat and holds grudges against those who defeat him, always seeking a rematch. Despite his violent and ruthless nature, he is not mindless. He is a highly rational and adaptive thinker, guided by a philosophy that the ability to adapt to any environment is the ultimate form of strength. This intelligence allows him to quickly assess dangerous situations and decide on the most effective course of action, even if it means temporarily cooperating with enemies. The most defining aspect of his personality is his fierce, almost absolute, devotion to his younger brother Toma. Everything Chobe does, from scarring his own face to accepting the dangerous mission to the island, is driven by a need to ensure Toma's safety and survival in a cruel world.

His primary motivation is the protection and reunion with his brother. While many convicts seek the elixir for immortality or to see a loved one again, Chobe's goal is more immediate and visceral: to return to Toma's side. He accepts the mission not just for a pardon, but as a path back to the person who matters most to him. In the story, Chobe serves as a major antagonist and later an anti-hero. Upon arriving on the island, he and Toma are quickly confronted by its supernatural guardians, the Tensen. After a devastating defeat, he undergoes a profound transformation, discovering the power of Tao, the life energy that governs the island. This event shifts his role from a mere criminal to a major threat, as he becomes a rival to the protagonist, Gabimaru. He is a key player in the central conflict, directly battling other convicts and the island's monstrous inhabitants.

Chobe's most significant relationship is with his brother, Toma. Toma is the only person he genuinely cares for, and his attachment is the sole force that can temper his savage instincts. Toma, in turn, is deeply loyal to Chobe, having infiltrated the Yamada Asaemon executioner clan to find a way to free him. His other key relationships are adversarial in nature. He shares a notable rivalry with Gabimaru, the ninja, whom he fights in a brutal and pivotal battle. This fight forces both characters to confront their deepest motivations and limits. He also forms a temporary and uneasy alliance with the convict Gantetsusai and the Asaemon Fuchi, showing his ability to cooperate with former enemies against a common, greater threat.

Throughout the story, Chobe undergoes a significant and tragic development. Initially a powerful but largely human criminal, his exposure to the island's Tao corrupts and transforms him. In his battle against Gabimaru, he loses control of his newfound power and undergoes a monstrous physical transformation, his skin turning black and his body sprouting tendrils. In this rampage, he loses his sense of self and even attacks Toma, which is the ultimate violation of his core principle. This event forces him to confront the cost of his power and the darkness inside him. After this fall, he is captured and rebuilt by the Tensen, returning in a new, smaller form with his powers altered but his memories and devotion to his brother intact.

Chobe possesses several notable abilities, most of which stem from his mastery of Tao. He is initially a brutal and physically powerful fighter, but after his defeat by the Doshi (servants of the Tensen), he awakens his ability to perceive and manipulate Tao. This allows him to heal from grievous wounds that would be fatal to a normal human, such as having his throat ripped out. As his power grows, he can weaponize Tao to enhance his physical strikes beyond normal limits. His ultimate ability is the Waitanhua Flower Tao Mode, a transformation that grants him immense power at the cost of his humanity and physical form, turning him into a terrifying, inhuman creature of pure combat instinct. He also demonstrates clever tactics, such as hiding bottles of Water Tao inside his own stomach for later use. Despite his savage fighting style, his combat approach is also strategic, often seeking to understand an opponent's abilities before striking decisively.
